I have been running FreeNAS 8.3.1 for a about year now, and decided to upgrade to the latest 9.2.1.5. The upgrade proceeded fine, but on the initial boot I noticed some smart errors being posted, 184 End-To-End_Error, for each of my four drives. I have 2 Volumes each setup as zfs raid1.

If I go through and check the status of all my drives with smartctl -a -q noserial /dev/ada0 through 3, sure enough on each of the drives indicated error ID# 184 End-to-End_Error. However right below that section the log says "No Errors Logged". I'm a little confused by that, and I've included a text file where I've copied and pasted the full output from each drive.

I've also been reading that this error is pretty serious, is it plausible that this error is legitimate on all four drives? Could this maybe be the indicator of the SATA controller failing?

Just wondering if anyone else has seen this before, and how freaked out I should be about this.

Thank you.

Yeah, End-to-End errors are very serious. It's a "my disk is f*cked" and you get it like a split second before your disk is f*cked.

The fact that every single one has that error is probably because something in the past triggered it. My guess is bad voltage or something along those lines. The fact that they are still working means things are probably okay.

Thanks for info, that makes sense.

Yep its quite possible that may have been caused by a power bump early on as I didn't have a UPS in place for a while. It's probably been that way for a long time, just never noticed it until I upgraded and saw the messages.

Cheers.
