We were running an 8.x environment until this weekend. I upgraded to 9.1 and have seen painfully slow transfers ever since. I'm talking 500 KB/sec transfers. We were seeing around 30-50 MB/sec before the upgrade. This occurs on both SMB and AFP shares.

Are there any suggestions to improve speed? If you need any more information, let me know.

Thanks!

Buy a new server or downgrade to the old version.

It's like saying the car is slow, but you neglected to tell us it's got a flat tire or a blown headgasket.

Please provide relevant information in item 3 of the Forum Rules.

Surprise.. you are using an underpowered CPU with FreeNAS.

I never once reached high CPU utilization under 8.3. Is it really a huge increase in system resources to 9.1? We ran the system for over a year with fine performance up until the upgrade. If the upgrade really needs that much out of the processor, I'll just downgrade.

Going from FreeBSD 8 to FreeBSD 9 is like going from Windows XP to Vista. It's a pretty big jump, and if you are already underpowered it could put you off the cliff.

Ok. I've downgraded back to 8.3. The same transfer that used 75-90% CPU utilization in 9.1 is only using 5-10% in 8.3.

Can you tell me which process? Is it only afpd and/or smbd? How much free memory does top show you in both incarnations of the system? I'm well acquainted with software bloat, but 5-10% going to 75-90% does seem a bit excessive, and you may have in fact encountered one or more bugs that only manifest themselves in low-resource scenarios. It would be good to know more. Thanks.

I have a similar problem I was wondering if anyone can help. Note: I did a fresh install and not an upgrade.

FreeNas 8.3.1 / 9.1.1
Intel S1200KPR
i3-3220
16GB ECC DDR3
2x2TB Mirror ZFS
Only one interface is being used
Autotune enabled

8.3.1 Speed
Transfer from NAS to PC = 80MB/s on average
Transfer from PC to NAS = 100MB/s on average

9.1.1 Speed
Transfer from NAS to PC = 25MB/s on average
Transfer from PC to NAS = 100MB/s on average

I'm some what puzzled. For the upgrade, I exported my zpool then autoimport it once the new FreeNas was up. The other settings I re-did but nothing special just CIFS. Any suggestion?
