"Show Logging Console" via SSH?

Is there a way to enable the same console logging messaging that is seen in the GUI while logged in via SSH?

I'm thinking of something like the "Show Logging Console" command on a Cisco switch/router.

tail /var/log/messages is the easiest and doesn't flood your SSH session prompt with messages (which can get inconvenient when typing).

...and if you want the messages to scroll while they're happening (perhaps in another session than the one in which you're trying to type), you can use tail -f.
