The local network static IP of my FreeNAS server (known as "Remus") is 192.168.178.3
If I type it into the browser - WebGUI comes up. Tick.
If I ping it - yep, it's there. Tick.

BUT it doesn't appear as a device under 'Network' in File Explorer, and therefore I can't access it via CIFS share (which I obviously need to do).

Thoughts?

Edit: To clarify File Explorer.

Open file explorer (not internet explorer) and in the address bar type "\\192.168.178.3"

Takes 10 seconds but then chucks a Network Error - Windows cannot access \\192.168.178.3 (which is the reason for my question :) )

Do you mean Windows Defender or the firewall in the router?
Either way even it that worked it's not exactly a long term fix.

I'm not missing a "make visible to network devices" setting of some sort in FreeNAS am I?

Windows has a built in firewall. You need it configured to allow SMB traffic otherwise it won't work. This usually just means making sure network type is set to 'home' and not 'public'.

My current (in windows) profile is private network so that should be ok.

Having the firewall activated or deactivated makes no difference I still can;t connect to the device (192.168.178.3)

Is that really the subnet/ip your router is handing out? It is super strange for an avg home user. What is your router ip?

I don't know anything about subnets.
The fritz always uses 192.168.178.x
Ive assigned the ips below 50 incl the nas
As static.

I looked at the settings for the share and changed the Guest Account from 'TestUser' (which I had created) to 'nobody' and now I can see the share !!!!

I don't have permissions for it - but it's a start !

Finding it hard getting my head around this.

Try creating a new user for your share that is all lower case. For instance "sambaguest". Make it the owner of the dataset that you're sharing out, and under "services" -> "SMB" change the guest user from "TestUser" to "sambaguest".

Your log.smbd entries show repeated occurrences of "NT_STATUS_NO_SUCH_USER". Your user is "TestUser", but the output of "net usersidlist" shows "testuser". It's possible that you're running into some case sensitivity issues with your user name. I think these sorts of issues are why the convention is to use only lowercase letters in usernames.
