I recently upgraded the house to Windows 10. I have a total of two desktops and three laptops. On Freenas I have a volume that I want to share "Spare".

OK, so every computer in the house can access this volume EXCEPT for the main desktop that REALLY needs the access. Every computer can access it with the root/admin Freenas credentials in Windows, EXCEPT for my main desktop. On that desktop I get this error message after inputting the root/admin id and password:

Now, this is the ONLY computer in the house that requires a Windows login password (actually now using a 4-digit PIN as a new feature in Windows 10), so I'm thinking that this is the key to my problem.

Totally lost, hope someone can point me in the right direction!

Windows 10 + samba work fine for me. The message you posted explicitly states that you currently have an active session on the server in question. Open "cmd.exe" and type "net use". Make sure that you haven't mapped a drive using different credentials.

Aha, thank you! I did have a mapped drive. Disconnected it and everything works perfect now.

BTW: I subsequently mapped two drives to two different volumes. When I look at "net use", one is mapped as \\192.168.0.250\vol 1 and the other is mapped as \\freenas\vol 2. Why would one map use the IP address and the other use the network name?
Mostly idle curiosity, but also wondering if I did something wrong in the mapping.
