Hi!

I was looking to build a new freenas build. I have choose some parts, based off the Hardware requirement; from which I understand are compatible. But I would like to have a second opinion on the selected items. I'm looking to get a confirmation if that setup could work correctly.

mobo:

memory:
Crucial 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM ECC

disk:
6 x WD Red 2TB NAS Hard Disk Drive - 5400 RPM Class SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch - WD20EFRX
for a raidz2

System:
usb 2.0 16 gb key

Thx,

Should work fine, the ports should be controlled by the c222 chipset and from what I have read will work fine. Just make sure to put the board into AHCI mode and not raid before you start working with them in FreeNAS.

If you are using USB drives make sure you have two mirrored and you may even want to use a backup script and backup the config to the pool.

Initial space will be a little less than 8TB, so make sure that will be enough for a while or plan to either replace each drive with a larger one and resilver each one or add a SAS controller to expand the pool.

Don't forget to get a good power supply, Seasonic is often recommended on the boards but just make sure it is a quality one and not just a cheapo.

And figure out what you want for a case, if it will be somewhere that noise does not matter it's hard to beat the rackserver cases but the fans are loud. If it's somewhere that needs to stay fairly quiet a desktop style case will work better, just make sure there is ample cooling for the drives especially if they do not have much space between each one.
