Just saw these errors on my system, what do they mean? I have the M1015 in IT mode.

Funny thing is that this is a brand new WD Red drive and the reason I got the M1015 was because I was getting the cam errors on the old sata port. Changed to the M1015 and it has been solid for over a month and then all of the sudden I get the above errors on the same drive with a M1015 and sas > sata cables ?? Here is the smart results for the Red drive (da4)...

Any thoughts on this ? I haven't seen it again since that error above on the 16th.

There's not much doubt that the drive was failing. Raw_Read_Error_Rate is an internal attribute which accounts for sectors that could not be successfully read (too many errors for the disk's ECC to work).

Now, typically it's associated with bad sectors, but S.M.A.R.T. says there are none.

First order of business: Make sure you've got backups.
Second: What's your setup? RAIDZ2? Other hardware specs would be nice for future reference (should it be needed).
Third: Run a long test and post the results and the updated S.M.A.R.T. data

Thanks Eric,

Here is a screenshot of the system screen, cant remember exactly what Ive got in there but I don't have ECC ram or anything special, Running Raid Z1 with 5 x 3tb drives. 4 are WD green and the fifth is the WD red that I just replaced a WD green with. I know I should have Z2 and ECC ram etc but for $$ reasons I am stuck with this for a while.

I recently just changed to a M1015 Serverraid card and flashed to IT mode and am using a SAS-Sata expander cable. That has been working well so far.

The reason I got the M1015 was because I was having problems with this drive and I thought it was the sata port on the MB but I'm wondering about the disk itself now :\

Long smart test results to come.

Yeah so here is the smart test results after a long test, completed with read failure and read failure count has gone up !! uhh ohh !! This is effectively a brand new disk that is installed properly in a tower that never moves. If this needs replacing I would want to claim it on warranty. Would this be grounds for a warranty claim ? Funny thing is the original green drive that failed smart testing has been replaced under warranty and is sitting at the shop ready for collection. Back to the green drive I guess and another rebuild. This is starting to make me nervous :\

Thoughts ??

Thanks :)

What does your SMART result say at the beginning? I'm guessing something like:

=== START OF READ SMART DATA SECTION ===

SMART overall-health self-assessment test result: FAILED

If so, that should justify an RMA. Even if not, failing the self test should do it. I've RMA'd two Seagates recently based on failing attributes (without actually failing a self test), and had no issues--don't know what WD would do.

WD will let you RMA a disk with a failed assessment, failed SMART test, or failing SMART indicators.

Sigh..

PASSED means that it has no failed SMART parameters(which only applies to 3 parameters on your disk) and no failed SMART tests(which you don't do). So I'd expect it to say PASSED. This is like pointing at some random car in a parking lot and assuming it's in perfect working order. You really don't know for certain unless you test-drive it.

So what do I need to do here, I want to test it and I want to know if it's a problem or not? I thought running the long smart test yesterday was the best I could do? What do you suggest? I'll do it. Trying to learn here.

Appreciate the help :)

At the moment I have it set to run short tests 3 times a month and long test once a month. This drive is basically new and it's 1st scheduled long test is on the 2nd of next month. I manually ran the long test yesterday to see if there is any issues. I dont get it do I need to run 10 long tests in a row to stir up enough errors to trigger a smart flag or something ?

Oh shit.. you do run tests. I somehow didn't see them. Must have looked at the section below like a dumbass. That's what I get for 11pm.

If you look at your most recent test it failed before even getting 10% complete. So the disk is certainly bad and qualifies for an RMA on that alone.

As for tests, I have a long drawn out schedule in the how-to section if you want to give that a read. ;) I do long tests twice a month and short tests about every 4 days.

Ok thanks cyber. Looks like i'll pull this HDD and put in the spare green I have (after running wdidle this time ;) ) and run some more smart test with the red on my desktop and then try and get it warranted.

Looks like a Z2 rebuild is coming up sooner then i'd like as this single redundant drive business is making me nervous :p

Thanks.
Tony.
