I don't think that is an accurate reading
SMART gets it's data from the thermal sensors on the drive. If it say's it reached 63C, then it's a safe bet it reached that temperature. You may want to look at any potential cooling problems before continuing.

Thanks for the followup, so for clarity...
  • All you did was manually run sg_format --format --fmtpinfo=0 /dev/da2?
  • You are no longer seeing the these errors?:
  • (da0:mps0:0:8:0): READ(16). CDB: 88 00 00 00 00 01 5d 50 a3 71 00 00 00 04 00 00
(da0:mps0:0:8:0): CAM status: SCSI Status Error
    (da0:mps0:0:8:0): SCSI status: Check Condition
(da0:mps0:0:8:0): SCSI sense: ILLEGAL REQUEST asc:20,0 (Invalid command operation code)
    (da0:mps0:0:8:0): Field Replaceable Unit: 0
    (da0:mps0:0:8:0): Descriptor 0x80: 00 00 05 20 00 00 ff ff ff ff ff ff 00 00

I also suffered the same problem due to the disk's protection level, which was set on the harddrive by a previous windows format, not beeing supported under freenas.
The command u mentioned was one part of the solution for me. In addition, i had to trigger a initialization of the disks. I accomplished this by powering off the freenas server and physically reconnecting (hotswap out/in) the drives to there enclure (MD1000).
