As an FYI, taking off with the wife and kids for a 2 week road trip. Heading out west and will just enjoy the sites and POIs along the way.

Will hop on occasionally, but will be sparse.

How do you plan to handle powering the NAS? Most cig lighters are limited to 100 watts...

Drive safely.

The World's Largest Ball of Twine is in Cawker City, Kansas. Does that count as a POI?

Have a good trip

Just got back from mine. OKC to Phoenix and stopped for two days then over to LA (went through at 3am) and up the PCH to Hayward, CA. Came back through Reno along Highway 50 in Nevada and Utah till it became I70 then went to Denver. Ended up going south from Denver for a little ways then east to La Junta, CO where I headed south until I got into Oklahoma. Went across and down till I got home but never touched the interstate once I left it in Colorado.

Shot a Steel Challenge match in Phoenix, was supposed to shoot another in Richmond but the club people had some issues being on the same page but still got to throw a little lead downrange. Put in a Travertine floor as well as built and installed the cabinets at my fathers place for the majority of the time I was in CA.

Approx 1800 miles out and 1900 miles back. Now I need a vacation from my vacation....

Just over the border into KY. Kids in the pool, but found out this is a dry town... Left the wife with the kids and went out 15 miles to find a drive through liquor store... o_O

Talk about from one extreme to another... Now chilling by the pool with my PBR regretting not thinking of a way to run my NAS from the rental... it even has a 120V outlet.... ;)

LOL, yeah southern KY has quite a few "dry" counties. Sadly they have some of the greatest instances of drunk driving not to mention some of the highest drug abuse rates. I happened to be at a place where a phone call was made to a bootlegger who delivered the desired items to your door, I was dumbfounded.

Lived near Corbin for a couple years, my son is buried just north in Lily. Can check out where Colonel Sanders started his chicken franchise if you get that way. Also hear the locals tell what they say is the truth about the secret recipe being stolen from one of his house keepers. If you head south into Tennessee I really enjoyed Gatlinburg when I was there. There was a 10 or 12 story tall hotel in the La Follette area that was awesome to stay in during the colder months but I can not seem to find it anymore.

How far are you planning to go and which direction?

West toward Colorado then southward around New Mexico. Got 3 nights booked at a Reservation Casino. We like to pick a destination that is "off the normal path" meander there taking our time then take a different route back home.

Wow, we like those sorts of scenic driving vacations too.

I recommend stopping by the Catoosa Blue Whale. For some reason, your announcement reminded me of Sam & Max Hit the Road. Don't do anything they wouldn't do.

We incorporate some geocaching in our road trips.

It gives us some exercise and often takes us to places that only the locals know. With only 1825 finds over a 13 year span, we're not into the numbers. We have a good time and have another circle of friends in both the US and Canada.

Very cool. If you meander south towards Texas I would suggest Schlitterbahn in New Braunfels, TX http://www.schlitterbahn.com/new-braunfels I have not had a chance to go myself but a section of the park is naturally spring fed water and there are a couple of "adult only" pools with swim up bars that could be tempting. The kids will have a blast for sure.

If you end up in Oklahoma OKC has some merit in bricktown and they just opened up a man made white water rafting ride http://www.riversportokc.org/boathouse-district/get-on-the-water/whitewater-rafting/ and if you remember the ferris wheel in the movies on the santa monica pier well it's new home is actually in Oklahoma city.http://newsok.com/article/5494136 If the kids want to see some buffalo and don't want to go all the way to yellowstone or a small farm where they are in a pen there is always the Wichita Mountains Refuge https://www.fws.gov/refuge/wichita_mountains/ And if you like old buildings pretty much the entire downtown of Guthrie is on the historic register and one of the largest masonic temple is in Guthrie https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scottish_Rite_Temple_(Guthrie,_Oklahoma) , in the last couple years at least three films have been done here as well. I know William H Macy was here for a couple weeks. There is also the Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in OKC https://www.google.com/search?q=cowboy+and+western+heritage+museum+okc and the Oklahoma Teritorial Museum in Guthrie http://www.okterritorialmuseum.org/ Not to mention route 66 and anyone who comes through on 66 has to visit Pops in Arcadia http://www.pops66.com/soda-ranch/... Might I suggest getting the kids each a Martian Poop soda or maybe some Kitty Piddle. Seriously they make it and might even have it in stock.

If you are in the OKC area on August 6th the State USPSA Championships will be happening. Last I heard there will be at least 6 Grand Masters competing with around 150 total competitors. At least if that's your thing that is. Even to see a little of it is worthwhile, just bring some eye protection and earplugs for everyone. It's going to be hot but I will be out there scoring and doing some other volunteer work. It's due north of Pop's so hit it before and then have lunch and a soda after. Get yourself a bacon soda... The wife may like the Sweet Corn Soda. No I'm not kidding, you can even get a chocolate bacon soda, Ranch dressing, or hot wing soda.

Hey! You left off the Catoosa Blue Whale, the World's Largest Peanut, Arbuckle Fried Pies, the Beaver cow-chip throwing contest, the noodling competition, and Eischen's chicken. Oklahoma has everything that's worth having!

LOL, I am just picking a few of the things I can remember that are nearby me or where I have lived. But there is a ton of stuff to do. And those crazy people that go noodling can keep it. Ain't no way in HELL I am sticking my hand in a hole in the muddy river to catch a fish. I'll just sit on the sidelines and LMAO when you get pulled under by something someone flushed.

Lol, yeah no way I want to go noodling... those folks can have that all to themselves. May hit part of TX on the way back since we will like to take a different route back.

Drove right through Illinois and stayed just outside of St. Louis last night. No offense to anyone from Illinois, but I don't much care for it. Mostly due to them not honoring my CCW and having to put my daily carry away.

Will be fun to try and get some of those recommended sites in while I wait for the wife to get ready to basically hop in the SUV... Got at least an hour to kill... lol.

BTW, the only place I listed that's worth going to is Eischen's. You can skip the Catoosa Blue Whale and even the Tulsa Golden Driller.

I felt the same way in CA but had to be there and decided the PCH would make the trip interesting at least. They added Nevada to mine in the last couple years and part of the reason why I went back that way. Plus I get bored taking the same route every time and Highway 50 was great for me. Austin Nevada was REALLY cool with one side of town around 6500 feet and the other side is around 7500 feet. Talk about walking uphill to get somewhere....

So drive over/through the Rockies was awesome. Went to Black Canyons and that was truly something to add to any trip. So many altitude changes and Temps going from 54 @ higher altitude to 88 at lower. Basically get about all the seasons in one day... Eyes get tired just taking in all the views.

Sky Ute Casino is nice except you can't drink in the Casino... Wife is sad she lost $100.00 on Wheel of Fortune nickel slots... Curse you Pat Sajack :p.

So many pics taken already, will post a few later or make them public in Dropbox.

Black Canyon of the Gunnison?

I've been there twice and it's impressive.
