Last Friday, the FreeNAS (I think it's version 11.1) shut down. I booted it today, and I cannot login to the GUI anymore with the root password I set a few months ago.
I have access to the console though.

To reset the root password, do I just do that from runlevel 1, or will that break stuff?
I can't find anywhere how to do it, the boot sequence on FreeBSD is a bit different.

You do it from the console menu.

I can't see the the console menu. When it's booting, it goes directly to this:

You changed something that you shouldn't have if you are not getting the menu.

Did you disable the console menu (one of the settings in the web GUI)? If so, this is why you shouldn't do that. If not, it looks like something strange has happened to your installation.

Your system should boot (on the console) to a menu like this:

If you disabled that, you can type the command /usr/libexec/getty freenas to launch the menu, even from a ssh session.

...or /etc/netcli, but you need to be able to log in first.

i think that reinstalling FreeNAS to your boot device will probably repair the installation and allow you to scavenge the configuration
