I'm using a flash drive to run 7.x. For whatever reason, after moving our server it comes up with the dreaded fatal trap 12 error. I searched around and found a number of people thought it was a memory issue, but never could get passed it. I set up a new flash drive with 8.3 and that boots fine. Is there a way to copy specific files over from the old 7.x version to the new one and be able to access my storage volumes?

You should be able to just import the old storage volumes on the new 8.3 install. I assume you can see the disks just fine?

Yes, my new install of 8.3 sees the disks, but will not import. Get the standard errors I have found in the forum. Not sure how to fix things.

I have 3 disks that made up the volume on 7.x: /dev/adao, ada1, ada2

Import: Selected disks were not verified,

fsck: could not determine file system,

fsck_ufs: Inappropriate ioctl for device
fsck_ufs: /dev/ada1: can't read disk label

fdisk /dev/ada0 shows: Inappropriate ioctl for device
fsck_ufs: /dev/ada1: can't read disk label

dmesg: GEOM: ada0: corrupt or invalid GPT detected.
GEOM: ada0: GPT rejected -- may not be recoverable.

Did you try using another fresh FreeNAS7 or NAS4Free boot stick?

Those reports look so negative after a failure that isn't to do with the array that I'm inclined to think there's nothing wrong with it and 7 is more likely to know what's going on.

Just burned a new copy of 7.2. Same error (Fatal Trap 12). Tried various modes, but same problem. 8.3 boots up fine though. The box is a SuperMicro server. Not sure if that sheds any light on the subject.

Not to me, I'm sorry to say. No further ideas (except if you have spare disks, take a full block-for-block image of each disk and try any serious surgery on the clones.

If you're not doing it already, I'd suggest asking over in the NAS4free forums too.

Turns out the stick boots up fine on other boxes. I will take the issue to the other forum.

Thanks for the help!
