Interesting... I shut the box down, swapped ada0 and ada1 SATA cables and ada2 and ada3 SATA cables. ada0 and ada3 were the ones that had the checksum errors. After swapping all four cables I unplugged and replugged the SATA cables on the motherboard to make sure they were tight. Once I rebooted the box the Alert in the upper right hand corner of the FreeNAS GUI went from yellow to green and said the homeshares pool was healthy. This is before running the scrub.

The only other thing is that ada1 had been showing the following message:

Code:
Device: /dev/ada1, 4 Currently unreadable (pending) sectors

Once I swapped the cables the error message changed to the other drive...

Code:
Device: /dev/ada0, 4 Currently unreadable (pending) sectors

So maybe I do have a bad cable?

That's to be expected; the pool errors clear when you reboot.
Once I swapped the cables the error message changed to the other drive...
Also expected, that comes from the SMART data on the drive itself.

Go ahead and start the scrub; let's see what it says.

okay, started the scrub. Says it will take about three hours... I have a function to attend this evening. I will post the results of the scrub when I get back (hopefully it will be done by then). Thanks for your help!

So you swapped cables from ada0 and ada1, and now errors are showing up on ada1? Yeah, I'd say that sounds like a cable problem.

Looking at the results of the scrub one disk has 106 under the write column and one disk has 7.78k under the Checksum column. The 106 under the write column is ada0 (which has the cable from ada1) and the checksum disk is ada2 (which has the cable from ada3).

Could I have a bad motherboard connector?

Ah, I misread the output. So the one with the write errors now is one of the disks that was giving checksum errors before? And you've confirmed that the serial number still matches? Because ada0 might not be the same disk that it was previously. But if that's the case, yes, try switching to a different port on your motherboard. That would be odd, but not unheard of.

ada0, which has the write errors, is the new disk (the one that replaced the old ada0. The checksum drive is ada2. But, since I switched the cables it was originally ada3, which was throwing errors after I swapped the drives.

You should stop using references to ada0.

What I don't see here are the outputs from all of your hard drives smartctl -a /dev/ada0 and do this for all drives, ada1, ada2, etc... Place in code tags. The data here would help identify if this is an interface issue or internal hard drive issue. Reference the link in my signature for troubleshooting hard drives, it gives good instructions on troubleshooting this type of problem.

EDIT: Also, pending sector errors are a sign of internal drive issues, not typically a cable issue. UDMA CRC Errors are a typical cable issue.

Much better. It's warmer than it should be, but that isn't causing your problem. It's never had a SMART test done, which you probably should have done before putting it into service, but it isn't reporting any errors at this time.

Drive 2 is also warmer than it should be and has no SMART tests logged, but otherwise doesn't look problematic.

Edit: Ditto Drive 3.

OK, so all your disks are looking mostly OK. Disk 4 has a few pending sectors, which isn't a good thing, but it doesn't demand immediate action. They're all running warmer than we'd like to see, but that also isn't a critical issue. So, why are errors coming up during your scrubs? I'm still thinking cables are a good bet (and they're cheap to try to fix).

Okay, so actually I switched to a different SATA port on the motherboard, and ran a scrub. Scrub came back with no read, write or checksum errors and the alert message went away. The only thing I am seeing in the GUI is the 4 pending sectors in Disk 4.

Should I purchase a 2nd drive to replace drive 4?
Should I purchase all new SATA cables?
Should I now run SMART tests on all drives? Short or long?

I have two fans in my FreeNAS box, but admittedly the room does get warm. Would you recommend relocating to a different room, say the basement? I don't have an ethernet connection down there, so I can go WIFI with the NAS?

Thanks for your help!
