Recurring issue with files occasionally throwing permanent error after scrubs

Hey guys,

So this issue happens maybe once every few months, but it is getting to the point that I would like to try and figure out what the cause might be. So in short, what seems to be happening is that once every few months, I will get an error after a scrub:
pool: tank
state: ONLINE
status: One or more devices has experienced an error resulting in data
corruption. Applications may be affected.
action: Restore the file in question if possible. Otherwise restore the
entire pool from backup.
When I run zpool status -v, the error caused by a file in my mnt/media folder (usually some random movie, tv episode) etc. Here is the most recent example

NAME STATE READ WRITE CKS UM
tank ONLINE 0 0 0
mirror-0 ONLINE 0 0 0
gptid/0b0a6849-7157-11ec-bfe8-04d4c4493e43 ONLINE 0 0 0
gptid/0b1810a3-7157-11ec-bfe8-04d4c4493e43 ONLINE 0 0 0
mirror-1 ONLINE 0 0 0
gptid/6fc2ede6-84d2-11ec-90a3-18c04da9b4e8 ONLINE 0 0 0
gptid/bcb4c894-9044-11ed-baf3-001b2163afad ONLINE 0 0 0

errors: Permanent errors have been detected in the following files:

tank/media/movies@auto-2023-04-02_00-00:/Despicable Me 3 (2017)/Despicab le.Me.3

So my process is to usually delete the file and directory, and then rescrub the pool, at which point the error will remain, but instead of the file name, it will be the pointer address to where the file was. Usually some combination of rescrubbing and restarting will lead me to manually clear the error and everything is fine until the next time this happens.

So I am trying to figure out what the issue might be. I am currently using the motherboard sata ports along with a PCIe sata card. Is it possible that it is the sata cables, or the expansion sata card?

I invested in a nice SAS card and have been planning to replacing the sata card with that, but have not gotten around to it. From my research, it seems like that might be the culprit, but was hoping someone might be able to confirm that for me, or offer any other ideas as to what might be causing the issue. Thanks!

Welcome to the forums.

Sorry to hear you're having trouble. Please take a few moments to review the Forum Rules, conveniently linked at the top of every page in red, and pay particular attention to the section on how to formulate a useful problem report, especially including a detailed description of your hardware and disk attachment hardware.

You've basically given no one anything to work with, so the responses will tend to be random guesses rather than anything useful.

I think the hint here that you are using some sort of whacky cheap SATA card is your problem, and this type of behavior is exactly what I would expect to see with a crappy HBA/and or cables.

Replace them all with a HBA from a reputable seller like theartofserver so that you don't wind up with a fake chinese clone that will probably fail and buy some decent breakout cables from a reputable seller also. I'd bet that solves your issue, but @jgreco is right we don't have alot to work with here. What are your system specs?

Apologies, I’ll admit that out of frustration I posted hoping for a quick fix while knowing the details were lacking. I’ll start with what has been posted and if I need help in the future I’ll make sure to follow the post suggestions more throughly. Thanks!
