My main drive in the WHSv1 that I have been running since 2009 just died. I have a second drive that I was manually mirroring the contents on to so my data is safe.
I have decided to move away from WHS since it is discontinued. It only make sense from what I have read so far that I build the hardware around the type of file system and drive set up I use. I will give you a run down on what we need the NAS for so hopefully someone can get me started in the right direction. Once this is decided I will work on putting the proper hardware together.
This NAS is for home use by my wife and myself. Three things really.
1 Document storage / backup for word, excel, etc.
2 Photo storage. I shoot several dSLR cameras in RAW.
3 Music. I rip most of my own collection to flac and listen to the music on my PC. I also would like to stream it to the stereo through a Squeezebox type device in the future.
Right now I am close to a full 1TB of data so I am thinking 2TB of space should suit just fine. I have no intentions of storing or doing video playback.
I have considered 2 drives mirrored and a 3rd that gets used as a backup once a week. Correct me if I am wrong in that thinking or if there is a more proper way to do it.
Thank you.
