I have now experienced the flaky Realtek issue first hand. When one of my hosts (currently my primary) accesses a NFS share I get some weird issues. More specifically - I have some terrible issues when streaming media. Starting from the beginning of the file and playing straight through works great. If I try to pause the video for an extended time or try to skip to another portion it will lock up. Sometimes when trying to skip after the initial launch it will take a couple of minutes to figure out where in the file it needs to be. If I leave the video paused and try to play again it will not resume. From my laptop across wireless I can skip to a different section and it takes just a couple seconds to queue up. I can also pause a video and close the lid which will cause the laptop to go into standby and then launch the video almost instantaneously without issue.
This is a very old Realtek Gigabit NIC so that may also be complicating things.
