Hi,

I received an email last night from my freenas box. Should I be concerned about this? A read error doesnt sound good to me.

Thanks,
Rich

I would.

There are several posts in the forum about smart tests and how to interpret them. Also back-up whatever is important before it gets worse ...

This is my back freenas box. I will give smart tests a shot & see whats happening. I wasnt sure if it was a hardware error or something else.

So I setup the smart test & no errors were reported or emailed? Was it a one time thing?

I setup the smart test
Did you enable the SMART check service, or did you set up a SMART test task?

SMART checks look at a disk's built-in SMART attributes, which the drive updates continuously.

SMART tests run a disk's self-test routines, and either pass or fail.

In either case, you should receive an email alert of anything that is cause for concern, but it doesn't hurt to look at the status of each disk from time to time. To do that, you run smartctl -a <devname> or smartctl -x <devname> at the command-line.

The error reported in your original post might indicate a problem with da5, but it could also be a cable or port problem. For a 2nd opinion, post (between CODE tags) the output of smartctl -x /dev/da5.

Here is what I see:

1. You just recently setup running SMART Short Tests every 6 hours. Recommend changing this to once a day.

2. You do not have SMART Long Tests currently setup possibly, ensure you set this up to once a week. Both of these are my personal preferences, you can select something else if you like.

3. You have a single failure at hour 1981 (3 days ago). Since I see no corresponding failure I'd just keep an eye on this, specifically LBA
2041020072. Because of this failure you may want to change the SMART Long Test to once a night for a few weeks. This will test the drive while you sleep and if something fails, you should get an email stating such. Then go through the Hard Drive Troubleshooting Guide and see what the issue it. Odds are, if you get another failure you would be at the point to RMA the drive but I see nothing to substantiate it right now.

Based on the logs, my guess is a SMART extended test will report a read failure at LBA 2041020072. If so, it's grounds for an RMA. You could just keep an eye on it and see what happens, or you could burn it in again with badblocks and return it if the problem persists.

Thanks! I made the changes and will report back in a few weeks unless I get an error sooner!

Did you resolve the issue? I think we might the same problem. After having replaced almost everything in my machine, it turns out, the drive with worst behaviour is of type WD60EFRX-68L0BN1 just like yours. Other disks with device type WD60EFRX-68MYMN1 in my zpool, do not exibit the same behaviour (Throwing SCSI errors).
