hi

I'm receiving occasional (about once in a couple of weeks) a S.M.A.R.T error notification (via email) on one of the disks (different one each time).
The hardware is new and consists of:
ASROCK-C2750DI + 16GB ECC + 6 x 3TB WD-RED

when I try and run a full SMART diagnostic - I'm not getting any errors.

the text of the error is:
The following warning/error was logged by the smartd daemon:

Device: /dev/ada3, Read SMART Error Log Failed

I also get occasional security messages of the form:

kernel log messages:
> ahcich3: Timeout on slot 7 port 0
> ahcich3: is 00000000 cs 00000080 ss 00000000 rs 00000080 tfd 40 serr 00000000 cmd 10008717

any clue as to what is going wrong?

Could be a bad cable, bad disk or bad controller...

I have the same motherboard in my FreeNAS Mini and see similar timeout messages. The folks at iXsystems told me that those were nothing to be concerned about.

It shouldn't be a problem unless it's happening at a recurring frequency. You could try doing a BIOS and IPMI update if there is one for your system.
