Performance issues all of a sudden [SOLVED]

Hi All,

I am on FreeNAS-8.3.0-RELEASE-x64 (r12701M) on a HP N36L with 4 x Hitachi 7k3000 configured as RAIDZ. I use both SMB and AFP type shares to my Macs and Windows machines. Since yesterday, I've been noticing a lot of performance issues. I noted these errors in the log, are these anything to worry about?

Really? There aren't any other errors on the box, it's still got a green light. I also just noticed that a scrub is still running, 2 days later. How can I check the progress of the scrub?

smbd dying on signal 6? That's not suggesting a dying disk. That's suggesting hardware problems. Open it up and blow out all the fans, heatsinks, etc. and maybe try re-seating all the memory and cables.

Hard drives do exhibit bad behavior(and very short lifespans) if they overheat.

OK, going from bad to worse with the NAS causing hangs on the clients trying to access it. Still getting those errors too but heaps more. All indications are that the HDDs are OK?? How can I get to the bottom of this?

Honestly, my first guess is failing hard drives. Have you run long SMART tests on all of the drives? They should take several hours to run.

Also, what are your hard drive temperatures? If they're above 50C you can expect reliability issues with many models.

They aren't outputted anywhere. You view them using smartctl to view the status of how complete it is. Generally, if you do a long test and nothing is wrong your SMART parameter 197 will be 0. Paramater 197 is one of the biggest indicators that your hard drives are failing. If you look at your drive output you should see something like:

Another trick you can use for troubleshooting heat related problems is getting a can of cold spray from an electronics store and spraying the suspected temperature sensitive component with enough (not A LOT) to keep it consistently cooler over whatever time period you appear to be getting the error messages, WHILE THE POWER IS ON and the system is running normally. With the correct type of cold spray there is no risk of shorting anything out. So if for example you are getting an error in the log every 5 minutes and you think it might be your disk controller card, spray the chips on the card every 30 seconds for 5-10 minutes and see if the errors stop or occur less frequently. If they do, you found the problem. You don't need to spray the crap out of anything, just short bursts to keep the suspected chip(s) cooler.

You could also just go buy another controller and run that for a few hours and see if the errors stop, if not, then just return it.

That's what I mean, they are already all enabled. Was the first thing I did when I set this box up a while back.

Looking at the info below, looks like ada1 is the culprit drive. I'll replace that tomorrow and see what happens.

Just to close the loop on this issue, it definately was the HDD. As soon as I changed it everything came good.
