RAM question for Supermicro x11ssm-f Motherboard

I am building a new freenas server and bought x11ssm-f motherboard on a good deal. I am trying to search for a compatible RAM. It is hard to find and they are expensive. I just need 16GB. I am unable to find 2x8GB RAM. Can I go with a single 16GB chip that goes in only one slot or do I have to install them in pairs?

Also if you guys have any recommendations on buying used that will be great. Can't find many in eBay.
