hello

I am planning to setup free as on my nas and had a few questions:

1). If i want to just setup raid0 on my NAS do i have to setup ZFS ?

2) can i use different brand and size HDD?

3) if i use ZFS can someone guide me to some help notes which can help me understand ZFS correctly?

Thanks

Your presentation has helped me a LOT :)

A lot of things are clear to me, i do have a few questions though. As you have always insisted on having more RAM, i am now going to get atleast 8GB ram and then later add more.

However where i live its VERY hard to get server based boards and hardware, though it might cost $700 in the US, i will have to maybe shell out the double off that here to buy similar specs. That is why i have zero'ed in on these:

gigabyte-ga-h97m-d3h
crucial 2 x 4GB ram DDR 1333 non-ECC
Intel g3240 CPU
Corsair CS550 SMPS

I have a question regarding the RAID setup i should go with though. I was thinking to get 3 x 4TB HDD to start with, what RAID setup would you recommend i go with for data redundancy? Or should i go with smaller sized HDD and increase the number of disks to increase redundancy? Since budget is a constraint as 4TB disk cost over $180-$200 here :(

Hello Husein,

If you want to use FreeNAS, you need to have proper hardware (server grade motherboard, ECC RAM, etc.). If you are out of cost, then you should see others options (like NAS4Free).

Regards.
