Evening,

In short (old build, SM 2550F-O/CSE-721TQ) is a RaidZ1 of 4x 3TB drives used to hold backups of my primary FreeNAS server (8x 3TB in 4 mirror vdevs). I am running into 90% usage on my remote and looking to upgrade to the following. Most of the time it will just receive files and have read only shares available. As to reusing the 2550, most likely it is going into the rack and fulfill the role of pfsense.

Node 804
X11SCH-F
i3-8300
32GB Ram (I see Hynix and Micron is listed as supported memory, anyone else have any recommendations or know if other sticks work?)
4x more 3TB Seagate Iron Wolf, place into an 8 drive RaidZ2
LSI Logic SAS-9207 (Unsure where to grab one of these from, I see an amazon listing https://www.amazon.com/LSI-Logic-92...+mode+freenas&qid=1557060357&s=gateway&sr=8-2 , but not sure if its a good place to buy these from).

Looks good to me, you're switching to Z2 for extra redundancy, and the stated workload won't really need a lot of CPU/RAM.

As far as the HBA I'd either grab an HP H220 and flash it yourself or pick up a pre-flashed one from @theartofserver on eBay. (He's posted here a few times, but I don't remember his username.)

You'd probably also be fine with a SAS2008 based card since it's all spinning disks being used as a replication target, but might as well spend the extra $20 to be able to reuse the HBA again down the road.

Thanks for the HP recommendation, the seller popped up right away when I looked up the HP H220. If this thing works well I might rebuild my main NAS into something more compact (4U, 2x E5-2670), following most of these parts with an E3-2146G Xeon.

Edit: I cannot seem to find the X11SCH-F anywhere, well that is not demanding above msrp. Don't really want to spend the extra 60 + 40 in shipping. For the time being I will end up getting the HBA and move my 2550 over to the new case.

Welp got everything, shortening SATA power cables and figuring how I want to copy everything over. Debating about tossing the second hba into the 4u and copy everything that way vs. 1Gb.

Edit: Now that I am not on my cell phone. I shortened the SATA power cables since they were 30" inches long with 5" between each connector, it ended up making these horrible 2-3" loops that prevented me from seating the drives above the PSU (Node 804). I am a bit concerned about temps in the 804, even with the fans on full blast drives were still sitting at 36-38c. Swapped in some new fans and will try again later once I move everything back inside the case.

Right now I am rscyning my mirrored vdev to the RaidZ2, at 400+ MB/s, which means I should be finished in 4-6 hrs vs several days...
