So if I want to help prevent the single line out from being over-saturated and I have a router that is connected to 2 switches, one that goes to my second floor and one that goes into the basement. Can I run one ethernet out of the motherboard gig port to the second floor switch and one to the basement switch and then each switch is also connected to the router's lan ports. Will a computer upstairs be able to route through the upstairs switch properly and only saturate the direct line from there to the nas and a computer from the basement also be able to fully saturate it's line resulting in essentially the ability for both floors to operate at the full gig speeds?

Hey tibblist,

Clearly, you should not do something like that. Routing is a layer 3 function and the loop you are talking about is layer 2 only. Doing layer 2 redundancy will not help you and even less guarantee you the upstair systems will use the upstair switch.

Consider that No, you can not plug 2 cables in parallel to double your bandwidth.
