I'm thinking scratching QTS and put FreeNAS on my TS-853A ( 4x3TB and 4x2TB)
For the record:

CPU Intel N3150, 16GB RAM, 4 E1000 ethernet, USB2&3
My plan is to use a USB thumb drive for my tests and if it's successful, buy a EUSB DOM and replace the QNAP DOM with a bigger one storing FreeNAS os...

Is it Powerful enough ?
Any experience ?

I plan to host docker containers/jail/plugins

* basic file sharing
* syncthing
* medusa
* transmissionbt
...

Thanks in advance for your help and info!

I have a QNAP system that I have been considering doing this with. It has a Xeon CPU and 16GB of RAM. It is the system board that worries me. It has video output but it never showed me anything during power up. I didn't know if it would boot from some other device.

Thanks for the feedback.

I already booted an ubuntu live usb ( display showing on hdmi output). eg: for testing the memory upgrade to 16GB
The TS-853A has a "normal pc bios" configurable using the HDMI output and a usb keyboard...

I'm busy moving all my data an will try "soon" !

Did you need to do anything special to get it to boot from the USB device instead of their boot module?

No, exactly like a PC ...
Here is what I did

- power off
- unplug all hard disks
- plug in USB keyboard (in one port on the back)
- plug in USB stick 8GB (back of device)
- plug in usb stick containing FreeNAS installer (front port)
- plug in HDMI screen in one of the HDMI ports

power on
as soon as the numlock LED lights -->> I started hammering the Del key

After a few seconds ( longer than a normal PC mainboard), I got a BIOS config screen

There you can change the boot order
In the Save/Exit menu, there is a "boot override" menu where you can override the boot order for ONE boot!

I successfully
- booted the installer
- install FreeNAS on the stick
- boot from the stick
- connect to the web UI from another PC

I didn't start configuring the hard disks, I'd need to remove my "production" disks from the caddies and pu spare disk ... just to play with FreeNAS ;-)

It looks like it could be possible to replace the DOM with such an thing [1]

I need to finish moving my data out of the qts configuration before going further with FreeNAS on QNAP...

Good night !

Hi

I have just installed FreeNAS on my qnap ts-253a and it works just fine for now. I've upgraded the ram to 16gb and installed the OS on a samsung evo850 250gb via USB. I'm planning to use it as a media server so any advice on any plugins, setup, do's and don'ts will be much appreciated. I will slowly try and transfer data across as I don't want to go through the trouble of transferring it all and then screw up the setup and have to start again.

ech1965 how is yours working so far? Any tips?

Thank you and looking forward to your replies.

You might want to start a thread of your own so people are not replying to your post in this thread, which might cause confusion as your questions are likely different from the ones that @ech1965 might have.

Based on your experience, I gave it a try with a QNAP system I have access to and I ran into a few issues that I think are hardware compatibility. The unit I have is a 16 bay rack mount and it has a hot-swap backplane that connects directly to the system board with an edge connector. The system board has a lot of fairly standard looking features including the RAM (DDR3 ECC) and the Xeon E3 processor, but FreeNAS is not able to properly recognize the disk interface. It is being detected as SATA, when I thought it was SAS, but it will also not enable the SMART service under services which is preventing FreeNAS from running any SMART tests on the drives. It is also reporting in the log, "Error synching enclosure: 'notivier' object has no attribute 'zpool_enclosure_sync'.
I have only been tinkering with it for a couple days. Most features work, but a couple that I think are important, like SMART testing the drives, are not working.
I know that you already have it, so your situation is different, but for most people I would say that the QNAP hardware could be an option, if they can get a great deal on it, but it isn't ideal for FreeNAS because of some potential hardware incompatibility.

UPDATE: I looked through the log file and found that the system has 7 Marvel 88SE9125 SATA controllers (2 ports each) and the Intel chipset controller with 6 ports. There are 2 rear eSATA ports (probably from one of the Marvell controllers and 2 internal SATA ports on the system board, so the remaining ports are somehow wired to the hot-swap backplane to control the 16 drives in it. To me, this doesn't sound like a good hardware solution and certainly not a good solution for FreeNAS.

This is for the model I have, other models may differ, your mileage may vary.

Some news:

I'm slowly finding my way in freenas ( busy right now studying iocage ..) so I do not have advices for you ( but any tuto about freenas would fit...)

As far as hardware support is concerned: See bellow for the lspci ( TS-853A)

Ethernet are recognized (I put all 4 in a lagg0 lacp on my dlink DGS1210)

LCD screen stuck a "SYSTEM BOOTING"... need to find ou how to port/adapt this

https://forum.qnap.com/viewtopic.php?f=147&t=76581

I'l keep this post updated ....

Quick Update:

* Freenas installed
* LACP OK ( 4 ethernets)
* Still no progress with LCD ( System booting)
* Minor issue with HDD leds: Leds for HDD 1 & 2 aren't blinking on hdd access. ( steady on ...)

Off topic: Now working on scripts to deploy jails using iocage

Cheers
