I started to flash my H310 last night. I removed all other RAID cards in the Dell r710 and installed the new H310. Have not yet connected the wires to the backplane. Using following instructions:

https://tylermade.net/2017/06/27/ho...-lsi-9211-8i-firmware-hba-for-freenas-unraid/

Loaded DOS on thumbdrive with LSI Firmware files from http://www.mediafire.com/file/6mtie10d9ud6675/LSI-9211-8i.zip

1. I got the SAS address.

2. When i do next command megarec.exe -writesbr 0 sbrempty.bin, I do not get an error. It says 'chip is in fusion mode... Success'. From my understanding, fusion mode = IT

3. This is where i get a little confused... next step is megarec.exe -cleanflash 0. I skip this step since i am already in IT mode.

4. Reboot server.

5. at prompt sas2flsh.exe -o -f 6GBPSAS.fw to flash Dell HBA FW. This is where I get issues. It begins but then fails "firmware download failed, Due to error reaminig commands will not be executed... exiting sas2flash".

when I type sas2flsh.exe -listall, I get "LSI SAS: SAS2008(??), controller is not operational..."

Any ideas?

No, not correct at all. That means the chip is ready to be worked on.

This is where you clear the old flash out of the prom, you can't skip this, it won't work.

Probably fails because you did not clean the old flash out of memory. You must clear it before you can program it.
when i type "sas2flsh.exe -listall", i get "LSI SAS: SAS2008(??), controller is not operational..."
Because you left it in fusion mode and have not programmed it.
You absolutely MUST follow the steps exactly or it does not work.

The good news is, you can start over, you did not brick the card.

Does it matter what cable is plugged where from h310 to backplane?

PS. I did some searching and I didn't find good instructions for this online. They all leave important steps out. If you have not got it working, post back and I will type up the steps that I use.
Does that model server have a UEFI firmware or is it able to run in 'legacy' mode?

If I recall correctly, the port at the top edge of the card should be the 0-3 ports and the bottom port should be the 4-7 port but, functionally there should be no difference. It might make a difference (easy / hard) when it comes to locating a drive.

So put back my boot disk. Wired the cable. Booted it up. Perfect. All seems to be working. So question... do i need to do anything or does FreeNAS recognize the existing drives? I do not have anything critical on this yet and had just set up some test drives. Everything seems back to normal except for the H310 that replaced the old SAS RAID card.

I have one of these. The R710 does have uefi boot mode. F2 setup, under boot i think. i used a cd/dvd adapter in the dvd slot to install a ssd for OS. i think they were $5 or $6 bucks, fleabay, https://www.ebay.com/itm/371755643102.

It depends on if the hardware RAID card put any garbage on the disks. If it didn't, you're good to go. If it did, you might want to clean it up.

No worries. I was going to wipe them clean anyway. they are old 500GB drives. I might use those for backups or something. I set them up to learn.

Now i need to buy some new drives :) What is the max size drives I can pickup?

Thanks Irondude. good to know. Currently i am running USB thumb drives. Was going to mirror the OS on a second. I had looked at that setup. Where did you get power for SSD? Does power cable for CD suffice?

Is it a 2.5 inch bay? Seagate makes a good 4TB drive for 2.5 bay but it is 15mm thick.
What do you have?

People are successfully using 8TB drives on that SAS controller but some people have reported issues with certain models of 10TB drive. The SAS controller shouldn't have any problems.

Power from the dvd connector works fine. that adapter has a face that's labeled dvd and has a activity light where the paperclip eject hole is.

Thank you all for your help and quick responses. I really appreciate the help.

I got this "freenas.local daily security run output" this morning (took out a few device IDs and serial numbers). Anything I should be worried about?:
Code:

I don't believe so, looks like you just received a notice of the new hardware in your system.
