Long time resident (comparatively speaking) in the heart of Silicon Valley. Tired of multiple computers with massive amounts of disk space, needing to update them on a regular basis. Looking to finally build a server and centralize most of the read-only files in one place as well as act as a Music, Movie, and Backup Server as well as reduce the "local storage" in each computer. Hoping that FreeNAS can fill that role and hoping that this forum can help me make it work!

Very sensible plans. FreeNAS packages the server capabilities of FreeBSD in a rather easy-to-use form.

When I had a FreeNAS, I added a quassel core instance which would remain connected should my personal box ever disconnect, and that is only one possible option one could add to FreeNAS in one way or other. With the version I used at the time, I believe I setup a jail which held the quassel core that the quassel client on my personal box connected to for IRC. Since then my primary activity on these forums has been the themes and occasionally solving random XenForo errors (mostly related to config or theme issues).

Wishing you success!
