What's the recommended power for a FreeNAS with the following;

SuperMicro X9SCL-F, Intel Xeon E3-1230V2, 6 6TB WD Red Drives, 3 120mm Case Fans

I am looking at a cougar A-series A450 80 plus Bronze power supply.

If you go for Seasonic G-360 you will need additional sata connectors, it comes with only 4. You can also look to G-450.

Thank you. I can find a few 1-to-4 or 1-to-5 molex to sata cables out there.

My main area of concern is what wattage power supply will work good for my intended setup.

Am looking to run this system the way it is for a while with minimal upgrades only to increase memory and larger hard drives.

Thank you very much for the info

Based on that info I am getting that a 350watt power supply minimum will be sufficient for my SuperMicro X9SCL-F board with Intel E3-1230V2 Processor, 6 WD RED 6TB Drives, 3 120mm Case fans and CPU 120mm Fan

Yep, as marbus90 suggested. Seasonic PSU are excellent.

I have a Seasonic 430W for my NAS box with x4 NAS WD Reds, x2 WD Greens, and x1 WD Purple.
Ok, its not a G series, but I don't expect any problems with it.

WD Red on normal write/read uses 5.3 W http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/library/SpecSheet/ENG/2879-800002.pdf.
Making a fast calculation, idling you may use 60-70W. During heavy usage, maybe you can use near 180-210W.

No, they use 1.75A on 12V each during spinup -> 21W, plus another 12A@12V for mainboard/controllers etc. -> ~22.5A minimum required. If you plan that too close with continous and not with peak load, you'll risk setting the magic smoke free.

Based on the info ~22.5A@12V that's 270 Watts. Thank you guys for all the useful information. Has anyone consider a modular PSU so you only use the cables you need giving a cleaner install and less obstruction to cooling.

Opss...missed spin-up Amperage... Yes, you are right. I did not get deeply on motherboard spec, do you think for that setup the maximum power requirement then is near 270 during disk spin-up?

@Theo Marshall
I would go with modular.

Usually it wouldn't. But 12A at 12V is standard allocation and still doesn't fully utilize most small PSUs.

Yes. The Seasonic G-450 is a excellent choice.

The G-450 is probably the best 450W PSU you can buy without such catches as "is fanless" or "costs more than the rest of your system".

Theo, you’ve made a great choice as far as the Seasonic power supply is concerned, I think 350W is more than enough. Please note that it can provide uninterrupted supply upto 300W or so I think, I’ll need to check with its datasheet. 350W is the maximum supply it can provide for a very limited time. You can check that from the datasheet that you might’ve gotten with it. I guess it’ll be more than enough for you.
