I have been studying and decided to build my first Nas . As the title says ,I was just configuring and the power flashed out for 30 seconds maybe. I had setup the account, 2 users ,and set up volumes and zfs that was about it. Now I cant log in to my own NAS. Is there a way to start over since its empty and something must be corrupt. The server rebooted and seems ok but I cant get in with either of the user accounts. I dont know if its because I hadnt saved yet or because of the power outage. I tried pulling out the flash and clearing CMOS but it didnt seem to do anything. The freenas machine seems to boot up fine. I just cant log in with my other computer. Any help would be really appreiciated. System consists of Supermicro X10SAE-0 ,Intel E3-1246v3, 16gb Crucial 1600 ddr3 ECC ram , 5-wd red 2tb drives and a 4gb stick with freenas. Thanks, Paul

You can reset to factory defaults and start over.. That would be my advice.. Make sure you have WDIDLE ran on those drives.. Worse comes to worse rewrite the usb.. You should have a UPS to prevent losing a pool this way..

Thanks I guess I just need to find where that is. If its on screen after it boots up I believe there were 10 options I was going to try that but my keyboard is unresponsive after Feenas loads up. It works perfect as I check the MB bois but its useless under the freenas it doesnt lose power so it must be a setting in freenas I suppose. I am going to wipe the usb stick and try reinstalling freenas to it I suppose. Its funny I just recieved my cyberpower 1500 ups and had it charging in the other room! This is why I dont gamble ! LOL

Connect a monitor and keyboard (should've gone with a server board instead of a workstation board and you'd have IPMI ;)). There's a menu, type the number of your desired option (off the top of my head it may be option 6) and press enter.

Thanks yes I am a newb and I didnt know a bout IPMI and I do now unfortunately. I eneded up having to make a new flash drive becuase everytime I log out or shut it down I still cant login. Does anyone know how to fix this. I have had this thing running for days on a MB box with 5 2 tb wd reds. I have setup my users groups networked to my other computers. Set up plex, SMART a ups etc but today I decided to put it all in a 4u rack case and as usual I cant log in. It now will require a 4th flash drive to be formatted and burned and I must start all over again. Which is fine but what if I have a power outage and the ups finally runs out of battery ? LOL there goes all my data again and all the work setting this thing up. What am I missing ? Is there a save button I am not seeing? Why doesnt it ever let me log back in as either user after shutdown? I have been reading and studying this stuff for weeks and I am stuck. Thanks for any help. Paul

Oh yes I forgot to mention when I do burn a 4th flash frive and start over again after wasting days of setting this thing up. The keyboard goes dead after freenas starts up so I am not able to select option # 8 which is some kind of reset to factory settings. I have looked everywhere thru supermicros not too great manual to try to enable legacy keyboard but I havent found it yet so that is not an option.I tied other keyboard but it is definately in the software or operating system though. I cant believe I am going on a week of not being able to load data on this freenas with 100% new hardware . I am sure its my fault but I am so frustrated. I feel like I have read a million pages and learned a ton of stuff but I am missing something very basic probably. any help is truly appreciated.

I really think the ASrocks server motherboards are my next try. I sent 1 supermicro back and got another one but it is still the same. The IPMI on there boards is supposed to be better than most 5K server sytem boards according to Wendal at the TEK. I really wanted something with some longetivity and some expandability is why I went with the SAE10 from supermicro plus it had all the goodies to make it a really nice regular WS or gaming board in the future. Dumb move on my part. I have had a really hard time trying to flash the bios and I finally just gave up and went with the stock onboard bios anyway. Again I am sure its probably me but Its soo easy on other boards. lol (To be fair It probably is in IPMI also) Unfortunately I had a socket 1150 processor and wanted a C226 board with lots of SATA ports and supermicro doesnt make one with IPMI . Now I am on a replacement MB and It appears there was nothing wrong with the first because this one is exactly the same. The ASROCK C226WS board has the IPMI and 10 SATA ports ! and is almost exactly the same otherwise but they disable one of Intels features I think it was Proset or something so I may go look at that. I am sure I could use it to interface with the server on the IPMI and actually have a keyboard that works on one of the 4 other ASUS windows computers I built and reset the Freenas after bootup but who knows if that will even fix the problem? I just dont understand why I cant ever log in. Is Freenas not keeping my passwords/usernames? I can give u guys my FreeNas address and passwords they dont work for me LOL :)

One thing you should be doing is saving your configuration file. You can do it via the webGUI or automate it with a cronjob. If you must start over, you'll be able to restore the configuration.

Well maybe that is it. I have yet to find anywhere to save. Once I burn and format a 4th flash drive and start over I am not shutting it off again until I find that in the gui or wherever I can to save the config. Its funny how it doesnt remember my settings but yet it wont let me even get in like it is a new system . I havent read about cronjobs yet so I will now . Thanks.

OK I found it! Woo hoo! After a week of reading building pulling my hair out and posting on here asking why my settings are losst. ....I found it. Its under settings\general Then scroll down I am assuming and at the bottom somewhere thats hidden there should be a button for FACTORY RESTORE and another or option for SAVE CONFIG ! Wow Not exactly easy to find but now that I know it will be easy. You would think that someone on here might know how to do this and help a new guy out. LOL Thanks anyway , Yall can go home now. LOL Yes its on page 76 of the manual After re reading it again all morning I found how to save settings!!! I am gonna go burn a 4th ISO and try and see! Woo HOO!

Well I thought I was helping a new guy out when I pointed out that FreeNAS had a feature to backup the configuration file. And suggested two ways of doing it.

For items covered in the manual, we can't rewrite it for every question on the forum. Nearly everyone here is a volunteer and doesn't get paid or even get recognition for helping out.

Is it possible your extra users aren't elevated enough to access the gui? Also are you unable to log in with root after the reboot? Instead of wasting all your time each reset, you might want to setup users first before configuring all your plugins and make sure they can access the right stuff.

Also, at least with my old msi board, my keyboard had to be plugged into the same usb hub as my flash drive or else it would just throw errors when the system tried to mount it.

Shouldn't you be able to re-image the same flash drive instead of using 4?

Lastly, the x10sl7-f has 4 sata ports, 8 sas/sata ports on an lsi controller, an 1150 socket, an extra pci x8 lane for an extra sata controller, and ipmi. It even has it's own following here. That thread covers a lot of how to manage the board on initial setup (mine is running memtest as I speak). You can get it new from newegg for about 250 or open-box for 200.

It still has 5 2tb WD red drives . There is no data on any of it. I still cant get into it. Im just stuck. Any Ideas is Really appreciated. To me it appears to be in the software or network of the Freenas. I can watch it do all the dos stuff . then it gives me the login screen and I have spent many many hours trying to login as either user and as admin and I cant get in. It just seems like I could start over with this pile of new hardware but i guess I cant because its the same IP address?

Yes, GPSguy, I am sorry, I was so frustrated from days of trying . It was good of you to say that. I found how to do it and it didnt help. I have a few other computors and thier hard drives are all pretty full so I really want to set up a Freenas. Along with a ton of Blue rays and a music collection. I just got a 8 port managed switch so maybee there is a way to change its IP ? I need to go read more about that I guess. I just dont understand why with new hardware it wont let me start over. maybee I should pull out each WD red and wipe them?

Do you have a monitor on the unit or are you running headless? What ip dies it tell you to go to. At which point does it all start breaking?

Do you mean root? The default user should be root and you may only be able to log into the server console via root, depending on the shell permissions assigned to new users you create.
