Hi dear helpers,

I have two issues with my FreeNAS.

On my FreeNAS I start a script /mnt/NAS1GB/btsync/btsync as type "Post init". Today this script didn't start automatically. I restarted the PC and it run. (Why doesn't the system work reliable? Do I have to control everything after every reboot?)

The logfile var/log/message doesn't include any messages since April 15th. Is that normal? Here is the last content:

On my FreeNAS I start a script /mnt/NAS1GB/btsync/btsync as type "Post init". Today this script didn't start automatically. I restarted the PC and it run. (Why doesn't the system work reliable? Do I have to control everything after every reboot?)

You are misunderstanding the function of a post-init script. It is meant to only run when the system boots. If you want to run a script regulary, create a cron job instead.

The logfile var/log/message doesn't include any messages since April 15th. Is that normal?
Apr 15 18:00:36 freenas syslogd: exiting on signal 15

Seeing that syslogd died on April 15, that makes sense.

Hi dlavigne,

thanks for your immediately response.

After a reboot, the /mnt/NAS1GB/btsync/btsync (Bittorrent sync) runs without problems. If I start it, it should run all the time the server is up (like always before). The problem occured after the new installation of 9.2.1.3. (What is the difference of starting a script once or starting a binary once?)

Is there a better way to run such a piece of software? (I saw, that BTSync is one of the Plugins, but this release isn't up to date.)

I looked after the process syslogd. For my surprise, it runs:

ps aux|grep syslogd
root 1663 0.0 0.1 12044 1736 ?? Ss 3:04PM 0:00.02 /usr/sbin/syslogd -s -C
root 3904 0.0 0.1 16272 1868 1 S+ 3:14PM 0:00.00 grep syslogd
Nonetheless, there are no new messages in /var/log/messages since April, 15th.

What can I do to solve these issues?

Greetings

Hi, merlinuwe,

you can try to restart the syslogd manually:

# /etc/rc.d/syslogd restart

but the only message you will get in /var/log/messages will be

Apr 27 21:54:25 freenas syslogd: exiting on signal 15
Apr 27 22:04:57 freenas syslogd: kernel boot file is /boot/kernel/kernel

Wouldn't it be better to start the process with a script (show below)? Then you can use the "post init" as intended with a script.

#!/bin/bash
#syslogd Startup Script

echo "Starting syslogd, because FreeNAS 9.2.1.3 isn't able to do it by itself ..."
/etc/rc.d/syslogd restart

The same trick is also possible with btsync:

#!/bin/bash
#BitTorrent Sync Startup Script

echo "Starting BitTorrent Sync Service..."
/mnt/NAS1GB/btsync/btsync --config /mnt/NAS1GB/btsync/sync.conf

Aren't these great solutions?

Oh yeah! This solution is really great - but only for the problem with btsync.

Wouldn't it be more fantastic, if FreeNAS could start syslogd reliable by itself?

Hm, I thought to be very smart, when I install the actual release FreeNAS-9.2.1.5-RELEASE-x64 (80c1d35). I hoped, that the problem with syslogd is solved or so ... So I deleted my init script call for syslogd, rebooted the NAS and what do you think happened? I'll show you the last line:
May 7 17:33:01 freenas syslogd: exiting on signal 15
The syslogd is still not running after reboot.

After setting up the init script call again, I rebooted some times. There are many other new lines. Exiting. Informative. (But not for me.)

There must be a snake trapped in my NAS because of the pythonmessages.

I set the ip of the nameserver back to the one of my router.

I'll go to sleep.

@merlinuwe

Oh, well slept. I had a dream. What, if I'd use a better script called by cron (user: root), that starts syslogd only, when it doesn't run and gives me feedback about what happened?

Here it is:

Code:
#!/bin/bash
# syslogd Startup Script

# Version FreeNAS auslesen
datei=/etc/version
versionsnr=`head -n 1 $datei`

# Wenn der Prozess syslogd läuft ...
if pgrep syslogd; then
  echo "Der Prozess syslogd läuft bereits (Prozess-ID: $(pgrep syslogd)), kein Neustart erforderlich."
  logger -i -t syslogstart.sh -- "syslogd läuft bereits (Prozess-ID: $(pgrep syslogd)), kein Neustart erforderlich."
# ... und wenn er nicht läuft:
else
  echo "Der Prozess syslogd läuft NICHT (Prozess-ID: $(pgrep syslogd))"
fi

exit 0

I could't resist to start cron every minute ...

Code:
May 9 18:33:02 freenas syslogd: exiting on signal 15
May 9 18:39:00 freenas syslogd: kernel boot file is /boot/kernel/kernel
May 9 18:39:00 freenas syslogstart.sh[38646]: Starte syslogd, weil FreeNAS-9.2.1.5-RELEASE-x64 (80c1d35) das immer noch nicht selber kann ...
May 9 18:40:00 freenas syslogstart.sh[38699]: syslogd läuft bereits (Prozess-ID: 38645), kein Neustart erforderlich.
May 9 18:40:01 freenas alert.py: [py.warnings:3068] /usr/local/www/freenasUI/middleware/notifier.py:3068: FutureWarning: The behavior of this method will change in future versions. Use specific 'len(elem)' or 'elem is not None' test instead. if not provider:
May 9 18:41:00 freenas syslogstart.sh[38774]: syslogd läuft bereits (Prozess-ID: 38645), kein Neustart erforderlich.
May 9 18:42:00 freenas syslogstart.sh[38849]: syslogd läuft bereits (Prozess-ID: 38645), kein Neustart erforderlich.

As you see, it runs.

Oh, I love this forum. It really helps to solve problems.

Greetings to all helpers, especially @merlinuwe.

Hi dear developers,

I didn't saw in the buglist to release 9.2.1.6 that the problem "/var/log/messages with no more logs" is listed till now, so I think it's priority is less than ZZZ. Am I right?

So many clicks on this issue and no response for the syslogd problem exect that of my big friend merlinuwe ... ;-)

Greetings,

merlinuwe
