I found some thread with people frurstated over the lack of WOL so I suspect the answer is no?

I hardly use my NAS, but when I do i want it there so it would be nice if it could power down at least to S1 which retains all memory in RAM etc.. to save a bit.

Thanks

WOL is hardware depending. Has nothing to do with freenas.

I know there is a script floating around to shut down the nas on zfs iddle somewhere on the forums. Shut down and not sleep state.

Well, WOL requires multiple things, and one of them is a driver for the NIC that supports WOL. Some claim to support WOL but don't work (which is one of the list of reasons why WOL is so frustrating).

To be honest I don't really spend any time on it because I just don't consider it a necessity nor something you should be using. If you've done your job well with chosing good hardware you'll have IPMI and all IPMI stuff I have used lets you remotely start up the server.

I have dealt with WOL on Dell desktops and laptops extensively, we used Livestate to install machines and that woke them up on request or when something needed install, or first install.
As CJ have stated WOL isn't the most reliable thing out there, and I can back that with lots of experience as there where no rhyme or reason for when a computer would or would not wake up.
Some didn't miss a beat while other could not be woken.
I would not generalize too much but it seemed that newer hardware was less reliable and had to be manually started more often.

I guess there is a reason it's called a magic packet.
