Hey all. I'm looking to build my first dedicated server after doing the whole old desktop parts scrapping bit for many years.

I plan on running Plex/Sonarr/Deluge etc.

If you could guys take a look at my build and offer suggestions I would be most appreciative. I'll probably pull the trigger over the next week and see what sales I can grab. My budget max is $1k. For the purpose of staying on budget I plan on mirroring the two drives I have initially and expanding later.

Note - I would use PCPartPicker but for some reason it thinks a micro ATX mobo that supports 32GB of RAM doesn't exist. I plan on shopping around for the best possible deal.

Supermicro Motherboard uATX DDR3 1600 LGA 1150 MBD-X10SLH-F-O
Intel Xeon E3-1226 v3
Kingston 32GB (4 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM ECC Registered DDR3 1600
Fractcal Design Node 304 Mini-ITX Case
2 x WD Red 2TB 7200 RPM
Seasonic 350W 80+ Bronze Certified APFC ATX 350 Power Supply

Thanks!

That's not going to work.

Fractcal Design Node 304 Mini-ITX Case
So what's the plan to cram that board into a miniITX chassis? Voodoo? Hot wash in the washing machine?

And while we're at it, why X10? You're starting with 32GB, so it's maxed out. An X11 board with two 16GB DIMMs would make more sense.

Save your cash and buy regular, non-Pro Reds.

There's very little reason not to use an 80+ Gold PSU as a baseline, these days. A Seasonic G-450 is a logical choice.

Wow, you're 100% right. I apologize for doing such a shit job. I made some adjustments to make my build less trash.

SeaSonic SSR-450RM 450W ATX12V
Crucial 8GB Single DDR3L 1600MT/s
Fractal Design Node 804

Thanks for your input.

Still think you should consider an x11 board instead.

Alright, how is this for a modified build list? I also failed to state on my original post that my target is streaming two plex streams, handling downloading/file management for media (sonarr, deluge, sickbeard etc) and also file storage and backups.

Not entirely sure the RAM is correct but I can't find much info on the X11's supported RAM.

Thank you everyone for input thus far.

Bonus question: If I wanted to virtualize my FreeNAS install I would need to get an HBA, correct?

Yes, in practice.
Looks good, but the X11SSM-F is generally only a few bucks more expensive and adds two SATA ports.

Great! Thank you, I made the adjustment on my list. Hopefully I get some good sales over the next week and I can drive the price even lower. I look forward to getting engaged in the community!
