PC stuck during Boot

So I tried converting my very old System into a FreeNAS but I'm not really getting anywhere as the System immediately hangs itself up before it even has the chance to list the HDD's.

Heck... I can't even get past a point where I'd tell it to go into the BIOS to make some changes without first unplugging the USB Stick holding the FreeNAS OS. Apparently just plugging in the USB Stick ( any USB Stick with the FreeNAS OS installed on ) crashes the PC be it after POST and when stops due to the lack of a Boot Device or while fiddling in the BIOS.

Motherboard is an EVGA X58 SLI Classified for an Intel LGA1366 Processor and 12GB ( 6x 2GB ) non ECC DDR3 RAM.

The BIOS, which I recall running the latest Firmware, is still old and rather limited in options...
I tried disabling everything Onboard like Sound, Ethernet, etc... without success.

Any ideas/suggestions what to look out for to solve this kind of problem?
Is it possible to download an older FreeNAS Version I could try that doesn't start as an ISO?
Wasn't able to find anything that didn't look super dated >_>

While suggestions could be made, I highly doubt they will be provided. This is simply based on the fact that you are trying to use hardware that is not recommended. Therefore, no one may want to assist with you getting a system running that more than likely poses a possibility for data loss.

Best suggestions I can provide are:
  1. Take some time to review the items in the "Recommended Reading" of my signature
  2. Get hardware that actually would be better suited for FreeNas
Sorry if this sounds rude, but just providing you with the best advice.

Well isn't that just great... So the Minimum Hardware Requirements and pretty much every YouTube Video claiming the possibility of building a FreeNAS System out of old parts a normal person may have accumulated after upgrading his main System is actually utter BS? Glorious marketing strategy in getting people interested =)

I imagined people going for FreeNAS to test things out first with the parts they have at hand and if they feel comfortable with how it performs then keep spending more into the System to increase it's reliability. Something I do not see happening after what I've just been reading.

But thanks anyway.

Nothing is really stopping you from building a FreeNas system out of old parts. Especially if it is only for "experimental" purposes. However, more often than not; those projects that start out as an "experiment" end up actually being used to house vital data. Then of course comes the postings about "Lost my pool" or "Help getting my data" or even where the person starts to see issues and complains about FreeNas. All of this usually occurs when the person ignores the recommended hardware and/or advice...

There even is a thread that demonstrates what happens over and over when people ignore the fundamental advice: How To Fail ... a guide to things not-to-do.

If you really wanted to just experiment (AND NOT TRUST IT WITH VITAL DATA); simply try this:
  1. Install FreeNas on a USB/HDD on a different machine that is not giving you an issue
  2. Right after the Install is done, don't Reboot... Instead Shutdown
  3. Transfer that USB/HDD to the "Test Machine" and now try to boot up and finish configurations

BTW, that video is terribly old and not the best source of information. Yeah, it does seem to be a bit on the marketing side too...
