Is there a way to enable PAE on my "old" Poweredge 6600 (16GB memory & 5*73G SCSI, not supporting AMD64) ?

Yes. Add something like the following to FREENAS.i386:

options         PAE                     # Physical Address Extensions Kernel

Beware as some drivers aren't PAE clean on i386.
