Hello,

I want to direct connect the TrueNAS host and a Windows client like so:

Host <-> Client

NIC 1 - Onboard 1 GBit; IP Range 1, Internet access, Switch involved for connection to other clients

NIC 2 - Plug In Card, 10 GBit, no switch

How would I set up NIC 2 in TrueNAS so that the Windows client is always using the fast 10 GBit connection for a SMB share?

Thanks

Give each interface a static address in the same subnet (that isn't the same as the "IP Range 1" for the server, or the default range on the Windows client). Connect the two interfaces directly. Check ping in both directions. Address the share by IP.

Hi @Redcoat

thanks and Yes, this was what I was thinking about.

And how might I achieve that part?

If you still want to use the server name to access the share, you'll need to have an entry in the workstation's local hosts file in C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts.

As @Redcoat noted, you can just use the IP address instead of the server name. If you want, you could add to your hosts file the name of your TrueNAS box and the IP address and then use the servername in the UNC connection.
