I just went through one of the more frustrating installs I've ever had, and I'm sharing to help the next poor sap.
First, I've ordered truenas boxes. End customer needs support, and I'm not always going to be here. Could get hit by a bus.
The drives arrived well packed but not labeled with SNs. As such I had an awesome tech go hunt them down via the GUI. Each Bay got a sticker...
What I didn't do or have was an install list for each shelf. Since I had multiple orders, a single photo would have fixed it. Unfortunately ...I didn't. So do a photo.
And then... They got hooked up in any order. After all I did say that the drives could even be transplanted, and the train would exist.
I also learned that there apparently is no way to get the drive id that truenas uses if a drive is missing without cycling it in and out. If there is, I'd really recommend having those instructions somewhere. Because I sent nearly 12 hours getting the hardware back up into a running state and relabeling everything.
So gptid is a useful piece of data to have, as well as the serial number and the drive slot and Bay. Put it in a spreadsheet.
Save yourself.
