hi together,

I've triet do install FreeNAS to a normal PC .... the setup was successful at the end I can find the local IP... http:// xxxx.xxxx.

but I can't access... seems to be no link... (no ping)
cable and switch are ok... what is the problem?

I read also in some docs that FreeNAS should be installed on a flash USB... that means a USB or better a SSD?

thanks for helping,
benito

Please provide detailed hardware information as well as version of FreeNAS.

FreeNAS can be installed on a flash drive (or mirrored flash drives). If you have a spare SATA port, a small SSD would be a better choice.

hi,
latest download 11.1
Hardware is a Acer Veriton X4620G with 4GB
and FreeNAS is on a USB3 Stick installed...
I will make a lot of tests with this configuration..

final setup should be on a small 32 or 64 GB ssd (whats better)
with 8GB Ram ...
and 2x 4TB SATA Raid 1

That is not enough memory. 8GB minimum is required. Please do not test FreeNAS with less than the minimum memory, as the tests might not perform as they would if FreeNAS had the memory it requires.

ok, but that is massive... 8GB only for using filesharing...
and why should the network not working correctly with 4GB RAM that is incomprehensible

and is it correct that FreeNAS system is on a own disk? preferred a SSD?
does the FreeNAS grow? is a 32gb SSD enough?
and on RAID1 is the RAID config on the 2 file disks or on the system SSD?

Because of ZFS, the RAM is used mostly for the ARC (it's basically a cache).

and is it correct that FreeNAS system is on a own disk? preferred a SSD?

Yes, and yes.

does the FreeNAS grow?

Yes but only with each update.

is a 32gb SSD enough?

Yes, no problem at all.

and on RAID1 is the RAID config on the 2 file disks or on the system SSD?

I'm not sure I understand the question; can you explain with more details please?

It is not just filesharing or just networking, but keeping data safe. Please read the ZFS primer. Typical filesystems need few resources because they were written long ago. ZFS is a modern filesystem written to address the problems found in other filesystems. Less safe filesystems don't need as many resources.

These questions are answered in the User Guide.

The boot disk can be a single disk or a mirrored volume. Data disks can be in any of the many layouts supported by ZFS.

This is 2018--8 GB is not "massive."

With any RAID configuration, that configuration is stored on the disks that comprise the array.

Did you assign the IP address or did it pull it from DHCP? What kind of NIC do you have? If it's a Realtek - we recommend replacing it with an Intel. An Intel Pro/1000 CT costs about $30 USD.

IP seems from DHCP Server, I don't have assigned it manually...
NIC realtek or broadcom... but why won't working?

You really need to read up on hardware recommendations that we have and also ZFS, FreeNAS in general. All these questions have already been answered in those threads/guides.
