I am thinking about upgrading my CPU soon which would mean i will have to swap majority of my PC parts. That's why i was thinking to build my own NAS with old parts since i have no more slots for drives on my pc...

All i want to know is will it fulfill my needs. It will be used mostly to store my projects (i am an architecture student) but usually i am working with other classmates so I would want to share files with them, but also there will be some of my private data.

Will it be possible for example to create a folder that can be accessed by internet by others while rest of the folders will be restricted? Also I wanted to allocate some storage for my parents that always hesitate to change their smartphones since they have a lot of travelling photos on them(they don't use PCs). To be honest i don't even know if it's possible to access the DIY NAS by internet, my knowledge is really limited here, please help.

Also that might be off topic but the CPU will be ryzen r5 3600 and i don't know if consumer CPU's are stable enough to run them 24/7

I would suggest looking into the thread by @danb35 for Nextcloud. https://www.truenas.com/community/t...llation-of-nextcloud-23-in-iocage-jail.62485/

If you use that on mobile devices to get photos backed up and for sharing or even local work on files, you should be fine to do what you mentioned.

You can either connect to it with the web client or with client/sync software available for most platforms, so it should be flexible enough for you.

The scripted install allows for you to have a secure reverse proxy and certificate managed automatically, so use on the Internet is secure enough to be used for most purposes.
