Fresh install of FreeNAS-9.3-STABLE-201501241715

Lenovo TS140 with 8GB RAM
https://amazon.com/Lenovo-ThinkServer-70A4000HUX-i3-4130-Computer/dp/B00F6EK9J2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1422376275&sr=8-1&keywords=ts140
with a single 3TB WD Red
https://amazon.com/gp/product/B008JJLW4M/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Router:
Cisco Linksys e2500 with DD-WRT

Over a wired connection I can get 5-10mbps read/write.
Over wireless I only get 300kbps - 1mbps.

Not sure what other information you need.
Why are my speeds so slow?

Thanks!
Chris

Your router only has 100Mbit ethernet ports in it, so your theoretical maximum is 12.5MBps. Personally I usually only hit around 9-10MB on 100Mb Fast Ethernet connections.

Wireless depends on many more factors though. I have an N900 router and even sitting right next to it I barely break 6MBps upload, but I have a crappy single band BGN wifi card in my laptop.

Oh that's a bummer about the router. Guess I'm maxed out over wired then. :/

With my current setup I download torrents at 6mbps over WiFi so I know it's capable of doing more how it is.
Any idea on why the FreeNAS is so slow over wireless?

As @nick779 said, your router has only 100Mbit ethernet ports (more info here). If you are using an ethernet cable to the router... well.. you are not using WiFi o_O. By experience, I know that it's not a good idea to use WiFi with FreeNAS (addition to compatibility issues, it's not stable at all). Furthermore, Linksys e2500 is not particularly characterized by good performance.

If you have money to spend on a router, the Asus RT-N66U is probably the best 802.11n access point around.

You can also just use a gigabit switch to connect your various wired clients.

The server is connected via Ethernet but the computer client is connected wirelessly. Also the link you posted says speeds up to 300mbps.

Thanks. I'll probably get one soon but I'd like to get this working properly in the mean time.

I'll keep this short and sweet because arguing about wifi speeds is beyond a waste of my time.

Anyone that complains because wifi is slow has no clue how it works. Simple as that. Wifi is a convenience technology, not a throughput one. If you don't like the speeds of wifi, that's your own problem. We flat out don't even bother troubleshooting problems that involve wifi, powerline, or other technology that is *very* well known to not provide anything remotely close to rated speed.

Good luck to everyone. Locking this thread before it turns into another wifi vs wired flamewar.
