New NAS like server

Hello everyone.I will make it short so i dont steal all of your time reading this.
I want to upgrade my old "server"
i3-550
4GB RAM
Storage:

Show : Disks arrays

Running W7 for 8years with Teamspeak FTP Samba for home network and in early days even some game server.
Originaly it is "HP ProLiant ML110 G6 Server".

But back to topic.I wanted to make some storage overhaul for some time now but also wanted some more redundancy like RAID5,6.
I got recommended FreeNAS and ZFS but i was against it until i have read about how it works,also i got pretty excited that something like 3 parity disks exists because i have read some articles about "RAID6 is dead".

Ok my build "is/gona be" this:
MB: Asrock Fatal1ty Gaming K4 (in shoping cart)
CPU: Ryzen R7 2700X (already have him for nice price 150USD,other 8C/16T are 300USD+ here)

unfortunatly i cant find sticks that are in support list in my country shops so i have to try some kingstone Unbuffered i can get :(

PSU: Seasonic CORE 650W (in shoping cart)
HBA: Later some 9211-8i
LAN: Later some 10Gig
Iam paranoid about cooling so we dont need to go in that direction :D

Plan is to go in RAIDZ2 direction with 6*6TB IronWolfs for now and maybe in future buy another 6*6TB and recreate it as RAIDZ3 12*6TB.
I will definitely run Teamspeak in one Jail and maybe i will come up with something more.
Also i want to ocasionaly run W7 VM for software that i dont have Linux alternative or until i find one.
I plan to use old server as Backup/Cold storage but that is like for another topic :D
Right now i want to buy the core components so i can start to play with FreeNAS.

So now the questions if i may:
1.Do you guys think i will need 8 or 16Gigs of ram for starters?
2.How high chance is there that those ECC sticks are gona work?
3.I definitely forgot somethings to so...

Yes i have read that at least twice now.Iam pretty sure about every part i picked except RAM.
No mention in guide about Ryzen tho :)

Only because it was not really tested out by enough people. Some folks are running this, most are not. But a Ryzen CPU should be fine.

What is your concern? Is it on the vendors approved list? If not then you will be taking a risk. I can tell you that Kingston ECC RAM is not on the current list at any capacity. Samsung, Crucial, and ADATA are listed. You can try the Kingston but it will be a risk on your part if it works okay. Before I would take the risk I would find out the chipset on the Kingston and compare it to the other three verified vendors. Maybe the chipsets are the same, maybe not. And I'd make sure the place you buy it from is willing to take them back if they don't work. I had to do that often, analyze the data and cross my fingers.

If you plan to run VMs, buy as much RAM as you can afford.

I have no idea. You could do a search for that product on Google and include your motherboard selection, see if someone else bought that combination and if they were good with it.

Hard drives are the most expensive parts followed by the electronics, and the hard drives are expected to fail about every 3 to 5 years. The computer will likely last you 10+ years, or until you just feel like rebuilding with something new (we all get that itch). Make sure you spend you money well. My main computer is over 10 years of age and I've been thinking about upgrading it but each time I do, I talk myself out of it because I bought very good hardware and even though it's slower compared to the new stuff on the market, it still does everything I need and it's fast. I'm sure if I were to start compiling code again, I would buy a new system but I have no interest in doing that anymore. My point, buy good stuff even if it costs you a little more. It will save you in the long run.

FreeNas is not very demanding computationally, so the CPU should be fine. Memory is used for cache of read / write operations to the storage pool, so having more is probably good. The most importat thing is reliability.

Yea iam gona have to risk it.The shop is good they have no problems with taking stuff back.

Yes and No, we have to use the Hardware Recommendations by FreeBSD OS and then we add very commonly used and proven hardware that works in multiple configurations. So your specific configuration, if it works and you perform enough testing to prove it's stable, then someone else might take the chance and build the same configuration. If you get 10+ people to build the same configuration or very similar, then it could become something that folks trust in. Data safety is the #1 reason to run ZFS file system and without stability it isn't desirable.

Make sure you perform all the burn-in testing, run Memtest86 for several days and ensure the case is closed up and the drives are installed to provide all the proper heat.

True.After some thinking about it i changed my mind and will invest in Asrock Rack and coresponding ECC RAM for it.

Yea burn in of rams will be done first but i will buy disks later.And then i will do another round of tests :D

Ok. Board and RAM(from support list) is here.However iam not sure what to think about memtest.

All tests except Test #10 are fine atleast for 10 runs but iam getting some Recoverable ECC errors detected.Should it be this way?

Should i RMA it?Or is there some other way to test the errors to be sure?
