New Drives Eating Chips?

Goofy title... I know :)

So I put in a pair of Exos 8TB drives. Mirror. Ran the Long Smart Test. Didn't see any issue. Started migrating to them a little bit ago. Lot's of writing going on.

These things sound like someone close by chewing chips with their mouth closed. Is this normal?

My 4TB Iron Wolfs which are 5900rpm have been so quiet... and these new drives sound like a concert in comparison.

I would return the drive. They shouldnt be making any noise other than some slight humming

Lots of folks opt to do badblocks before the smart tests to further weed out early failing drives.

Even during heavy writes? Maybe since it's 2 7200rpm drives in mirror, synchronized writes... double the sound level?

Yea... I've come across mentions of it. Hopefully things be alright. Wasn't an option time wise.

<Insert panicy tone>What model # of Exos 8TB did you buy?</Insert panicy tone>

Seagate has apparently screwed up the naming convention and called an SMR drive Exos 8TB, drive line 5E8, part ST8000AS0003. These would write much slower, and have more head movement, (aka noise), than regular PMR drives. The Exos drive line 7E8 appears to be normal PMR drives, like the 8TB ST8000NM000A. It's mostly not recommended to use SMR drives in RAID due to the irregular write performance.

Weirdly enough, the SMR drive is $50 more on Amazon that the PMR drive, (both 8TB).

That said, I have a version 2 Seagate 8TB SMR Archive drive for my backups. It works okay, just takes longer than a regular drive would for my backups. (I don't have any limit for backup times, so it's not a problem for me.)

Started with the "insert panicy tone" I was like oh crap... haha

Seagate Exos 7E8 8TB Internal Hard Drive HDD – 3.5 Inch 6Gb/s 7200 RPM 128MB Cache for Enterprise, Data Center – Frustration Free Packaging (ST8000NM0055)

I'm hoping the sound is normal... oddly, they were a bit louder in the beginning of writes, and seem a little quieter now... still being written to, but not as heavy.

Almost done with the zfs send/receive ... currently 3.2 of the almost 4tb

Though I do like bracketing the text with begin & end tags. That helps people who learned English as a second, (or third, ...), language. Without the visual cues, or tone of voice, we need to be clearer in our writings.
