I am looking into building my first freenas and researching the recommended hardware. My question is has anyone experience any problems using the Supermicro X9SCL-F Server board?

I'm using that exact board, and have had no trouble with it in roughly a year. If I were buying today, though, I'd probably get one of the X10 boards, as they're just the more current items.

There's really no reason to get an X9 instead of an X10, unless the price difference is significant. You get a slightly faster system that's also slightly more efficient.

The X9SCL is an extremely FreeBSD compatible board. It is also easily repurposed to many other server roles, and between it and the X9SCM, may be the best Sandy/Ivy Bridge server boards out there.

That being said, X10, yes, slightly faster, slightly lower power, and if you get the X10SL7, hard to beat the value of the built-in LSI controller.

I'd certainly recommend the X10SL7. If your a totally newbie (I thought that FreeBSD and FreeNAS were sequel films to "Free Willy") make sure you read all the stickies first. I was a total noob to FreeNas and never built a computer before. I had a basic understsnding what the components inside one were but that was it. I spent two months or more just reading up on what to do even before I bought a stick of RAM. Make lists and bookmark the threads applicable to your build not only on the Forum but else where on the internet. There is a lot to learn if your a total noob so take your time and enjoy the learning experience. If you need help don't hesitate to ask there is always an answer someplace on the forum.

And we don't mind throwing you a life preserver if you find yourself drowning, but we do expect you to paddle

I picked up X9SCL and X9SCM boards for very attractive prices from somebody who was upgrading to newer hardware. Absolutely no issues with either one. If you shop diligently, you can also get a great deal on an Ivy bridge CPU. They're also not too fussy about memory (using ECC memory, of course.) You will be far better off with an X9 board than any consumer motherboard.

If rock bottom cost is not the issue, the X10 boards are the way to go. Either way, you will be able to get good support on the forum.

Good luck.

I am using a X9 board , and have had for almost a year. Apart from a few reboots of NAS box, it has been in use constantly with not even a blip of trouble
