Thanks for all the help so far guys

waiting on one final drive !!!

i just got my memory and am attempting to run memtest for 24 hours at least -- never used it on EEC memory -- is there anything special to do ( working on googling this atm )

i have found the " how to hard drive burn in testing " guide, is there any other guide you recomend reading on the startup - ect

what plugins do you recommend using ?

and screenshots- any good guide for these ?

thanks for all your help and patience in this up hill battle ! i gotta say this was / is the longest learning curve ever for me i feel like :o

should i just purchase memtest ? i notice that MemTest86 v6 Pro Edition has some eec specific tests - are they useful ?

HAHAHA i am an idiot - sorry about the questions guys, i thought i read the manual, so i went back and looked today ( finally only worked a 10 hour day ) and i realized i only read a section -- looks like all ( or most - have not fully read ) questions are answered in other sections i missed --

so after the above shenanagans i successfully did alot of testing and have able to do most of what i wanted, my last hdd came in ( one of the ones they originally sent me was a 4th hdd/sdd drive )

so atm i am hard drive testing - in the guides it states not a place for qs, so i am asking here.
1 in badblocks 2 of my hdds are in test 2 @ 46 hours ( test 0xaa - reading and comparing ) @ 26% and moving slower then molasses tthe other 4 are 5 tests in and ~ 87% done (0cff test reading and comparing ) is this normal ? do the first 2 need to be replaced ?

2 i am a bit confused and no matter if i search google or the forums i cant seem to get a straight answer but from cyberjocks slideshow i think i can ?
a-can i add a to my zfs pool mirror, IE i have a 6drive z3 later can i add 6 more drives and 100% mirror the 6drive z3?
b- "a mirror is not a backup "
am i understanding this correctly to read that a mirror only increases read speeds ? and if i loose more then 3 drives in either the mirror OR original then the entire pool will be lost -- correct ?

- i really appreciate your guys help !~

still looking into the snapshots and later sections of the
manual ( mostly just rereading it )

When you have two or more drives in a vdev, one option for configuring that vdev is as a mirror, which means all the drives in the vdev are exact duplicates.

What you described is having a pool built from one RAIDZ3 vdev and then adding another RAIDZ3 vdev to that pool. Having multiple vdevs in a pool is known as striping. In this situation the two vdev will not be clones, and can in fact have different layouts. The pool's data will be spread across the vdevs.

I think your confusion may be partly due to the fact that striped mirrors are often recommended when maximizing IOPS is a system design goal, but that having multiple vdevs also improves IOPS regardless of the layout of each vdev.
a mirror is not a backup
True, also, RAIDZ is not backup, nor is any type of RAID. Mirroring and RAID are purely about data availability.
if i loose more then 3 drives in either the mirror OR original then the entire pool will be lost -- correct ?
If you lose any vdev from a pool, the pool is lost, therefore, if you lose more than 3 drives from a RAIDZ3 vdev, the pool containing that vdev is lost.

You're welcome. I should have mentioned that what you described, rather than duplicating the data from the first vdev to the second, would instead result in increased storage capacity for the pool (doubled capacity if the drives in both vdevs were the same size).

Just wanted to check in, still learning and massive amounts of questions still. but so far nas is doing great, even getting 150( ish ) mbps sustained writes ! Special thanks to all who helped !

if anyone can help answer a question ( 2 actually ) for me i would really appreciate it !~

@cyberjock i just reread this for like the 15th time and i noticed 1 thing i have a question about,

i use z3, you recommend 7/9/11 drives but " you can ignore this rule if this will be used to stream rips ect"

i have z3 and 6 drives, ( not sure how i missed this ) how would it affect me if i added another drive ( total of 7 ) ? i know i can overlook this, but should i ? i appreciate your time !

( this is just a home fileserver/ for streams ect, but i am still wrapping my head around everything as i have time to build is as follows
Intel Xeon E3 1231V3
MBD-X10SL7-F-O
(2)Crucial 16GB (2 x 8GB) CT2KIT102472BD160B ( total of 32gb)
(6)Seagate 4tb STBD4000400-- these are currently being phased out for WD reds-
Mushkin Enhanced ECO2 MKNSSDEC60GB mirrored boot drives
APC SMT1500 + AP9630 )

Just to clarify i know i will need to destroy this vdev / pool~ i can not add any disks ! but i can start over

that is fine like i said still in "beta" mode,

one more question more for my future planing i want to be able to dump and pull info relatively quick accross several pcs i know LACP is not going to increase speed ect, but that is just being done for fun ect- i have 4 ports aggregated besides 10GbE - how many mirrors or stripes ( i get those 2 confused - going to go read up on that ) do you recommend ?- or maybe a better question how much does read/write scale?

i dont understand this and not having luck understanding it via searches

how does 4k affect day to day, - dont get me wrong, i get hits on my searches, but i do not understand them :/ i am hoping someone can help.
specifically i am talking about this
page 34 on https://forums.freenas.org/index.ph...ning-vdev-zpool-zil-and-l2arc-for-noobs.7775/ that slide show.

"RAIDZ3 should have the total number of drives equal to 2n + 3. (ie 5, 7, 11, etc drives for
the VDev)
 This is to ensure ZFS stripes fall on the 4k sector boundary of newer generation hard
drives.
 If you do not intend to transfer large quantities of data constantly this thumbrule can be
disregarded. For instance, if you intend to use your server to stream DVD rips of your
collection, this thumbrule can be ignored."
