My boot volume is almost full... How did that happen? How to prevent?

Going into the files arborescence, finding the right files to delete, juggling with linux commands :) Following your instructions, I just got into the GUI and found the various previous version of Freenas gently stacked and ready to be deleted
Have you read this http://doc.freenas.org/9.10/ because nothing in freenas should be done on the cli.

Was it snapshots that caused the boot drive to grow? I can't think of anything else that would cause it to grow.

Btw once configured I don't think you need but maybe one snapshot a month and even that might be excessive considering how easy it is to just reinstall and load your saved config.

I think it is growth due to the snapshot produced by each update of its predecessor. If you do regular updates and don't delete any of the previous boot environment snapshots things do tend to accumulate.

EDIT:
I was able to log into the web ui. Took forever for the pages to load though. I wiped out some of the older releases.

----------------

OK I just received emails all within 30 min on my drive to work... over 80% full... 87 %... 94%... just SSH'd in and it's 100%. I can't load the GUI. I can SSH into it though. What do I do to prune the boot volume at the CLI?

Code:
e@freenas /boot]$ ls -lh

In the event someone else ends up here via Googling, my reason for a near-full boot volume was a bit of me being a derp.

"/root" lives on the boot volume, so if you FTP as root without changing the home folder and store stuff there, you're storing data on your boot volume. A few ISOs and video files put me there, so in the event that nothing else in this list applies to you and you're running low on space, and you have the habit of FTPing as root (shame on us both), that may well be your culprit.

Sorry to dig up a thread, but I am having the same issue. I went in to system/boot and deleted all the old boot environments, but it is still showing my 16gb as 96% full. I kept looking and confirmed that I am not using the boot device as the home directory. I also made sure that the reporting database doesn't point to the boot device.

The result of ls -lh /boot is:

Any chance you have the boot device being snapshot'ed?

[root@freenas ~]# du -sh /boot
...and to be clearer about it: I didn't ask about /boot. I don't care about /boot. I asked about /*. This is because everything in /, other than in /mnt, lives on the boot device. du -sh /* will tell you where the space is being used. du -sh /boot will only tell you what space is being used in /boot, which was unlikely to be the problem in the first place (if I had to guess, I'd guess it'd be in /root instead, but there's no need to guess).

I apologize for my ignorance. I am still learning the shell commands and I appreciate you helping me out. Here is the result you asked for.

Code:
Shell
[root@freenas ~]# du -sh /*
14G	/backup_odd
776K	/bin
62M	/boot
5.0K	/compat
13M	/conf
4.0K	/COPYRIGHT
6.7M	/data
6.5K	/dev
4.5K	/entropy
9.3M	/etc
6.0M	/lib
110K	/libexec
1.5K	/media

Good idea, I checked and there are no snapshots for the boot device only my main storage pool.

Sorry again for the confusion

14G /backup_odd
There's your problem. You've created a directory called /backup_odd, which lives on your boot device, and has 14 GB inside it. You'll need to either delete it, or move it onto your pool so it isn't taking space on your boot device.

That was it! I somehow had accidentally run a rsync task to the boot drive instead of my onsite backup. Thank you for your help!

Just to simplify this process remove old unused kernels
You link doesn't work for me at all, but you should never be messing with kernels as such in FreeNAS. If your problem is due to too many boot environments, then delete them as needed, but don't mess with individual files there. Of course, that's completely unrelated to the issue at hand in this thread that you necro'd.

Looks like LightShot for Chrome has issues. Anyway, I came across this thread by searching for same issue that I had "The capacity for the volume 'freenas-boot' is currently at 81%, while the recommended value is below 80%".
As per documentation I have deleted 5 boot images, using the GUI (System | Boot | selected the old boot image | delete and confirmed). I now have only 2 boot images left;
Initial Install
11.1-U4
11.1-U5 (active)
Unfortunately I do not have screenshot for the rest of them that were on that list before deleting them but they were all from last year.
http://prntscr.com/jvscum
My usage now is at 31%. Had same issue with Ubuntu. Did same thing there its back to normal.

No, it is very related and to be exact it was same issue. As far as necro'd it just helps new users who are searching for the exact same phrase and this will only help them.
