Hi guys,

As per the title, i have just moved all 3 4tb hdd into another machine, and when i went to edit and save a file it didnt allow me to do so. message was i didnt have permissions to do so.

I put the hdds back into the original machine and all is back to normal.

What am i missing?

Edit. i forgot to mention, any new files i created gained normal permissions, editable, savable.

pc 1: q6600/8gb
pc 2: ibm x3400/2x zeon/16gb

You say you moved your HDD's. Did you move your boot device as well (with your existing configuration)?

If you reinstalled FreeNAS and didn't restore your configuration, then you probably didn't reconfigure it correctly.

What version are you using on pc1 and are you using the same version on pc2?

Hi,
No i didn't use the boot usb because pc2 won't boot from FreeNAS on a thumb drive. MSdos boots but not FreeNAS for some reason.
And yes, Latest updates applied to both installs, and same config file for both pc.

You are positive you have the same configuration restored as from PC1? The permissions "should" be the same then. If you cannot boot from USB Flash then what is your boot device on PC2?

Check your client OS for ownership, it may be the mac address change of the new FreeNAS box
is causing an issue with permissions/ownership?

Are you accessing the files via a shared folder from another machine on the network? Are you trying to edit them locally? Are you part of a Domain? What share settings are you using? Are your users and groups set up the same? Do they have the same UID and GID?

@joeschmuck
Yes, the config file came from pc1. Boot in pc1 is a flashdrive and pc2 is a hdd

@BigDave
Sorry mate, you lost me with the os for ownership lol

@depasseg
You too have lost me with domain stuff lol. We have a small signage business, so files are accessed from a few different machines.

So i finally got it all working beautifully.

Started all over by:
1-Reinstalling freenas to hdd. (still wish i knew why i cant boot from usb and release that hdd bay)
2-Update freenas
3-Insert 3x 4tb zfs pool
3-Upload config file.

I'm glad to hear that you've got it working again.

Did you check to see if you have the latest BIOS for your IBM x3400? Often times, a newer BIOS might fix stuff you care about.

Yes , that was yesterday's fight, trying to figure out what file and how to flash the thing, only to find it had the latest 1.74a version. If anybody knows anything I don't please do tell.

Hi Ulises (and the rest of the community)!

I hope I'm not stepping on anyone's toes by re-using this thread.

I'm considering making a FreeNAS system out of an IBM x3400 7974 with the 4-drive bay and Xeon E5420 (2.5 GHz, 12 MB). 16 GB of compatible RAM is cheap. It currently has SATA drives in it, so I'm considering putting in (4) 4 TB drives.

I'm wondering if your system was actually able to utilize the full 4 TB of each drive.

Also, what are you looking at for transfer speeds?

Thanks for any insight you can give.

Hi Eric,

My setup has changed slightly since i bought my x3400 a couple months ago.
It's now got an Intel pro nic in lag, an m1015 and 32gb of ram and I couldnt be any happier with it.

My 3x 4tb hdd's (7tb total) are controlled by the m1015 and work perfectly fine , but I would have no clue if they would work with the original Serveraid 8k or whatever it was, I don't remember trying.

Transfer speeds are maxed out with an average of 120MB a sec from any computers on the network.

Good to know, thanks! I just remembered that the x3400 spans multiple generations. How old or which revision is yours? Which processor? I believe ours is the original x3400 from 2007, but I understand there's an M2, M3, maybe an M4. Just trying to get an idea of what to expect. 120MB/s is excellent (I believe that gigabit Ethernet at the client is the bottleneck at that point rather than the server); I'm hoping for at least 70MB/s.

I looked up the ServeRAID-8k, and there was a firmware update that gave it support for 2 TB drives, but larger than that is not supported. Could I possibly do software RAID via FreeNAS rather than leaving RAID performed by the 8k? Then again, perhaps the BIOS would be the issue at that point. Sigh....

Mine is the first version, with 2x x5420. The onboard nic worked well too, but the multiple port Intel pro cards are cheap so I thought why not.

Please do not use hardware RAID with ZFS on FreeNAS.

If you can't dumb down your controller, get a HBA like Ulises did. The M1015 flashed to IT mode is popular on the forum. Users often find them on eBay for ~$100.

Thanks for the info, guys! I think I'll go ahead and buy the 4 TB drives. Then I'll see if they can be utilized and if so buy more RAM, and if not decide whether to buy another storage controller or use another system. Working at a school and it can be hard to justify things that aren't guaranteed to work.

The reason for such a large NAS is we hired a full-time videographer/photographer last summer (he had been making videos on the side while working in Tech for a year before that) and he's already blown through 5 TB on our main server which utilizes an EMC VNX, which is extremely expensive to upgrade.
