Hi
I moved my NAS system from my Dads to my Mom's place. I've done this move a couple times before and had no issues, but this time I couldn't get into the files and found the Volume I'm trying to access has an Unknown Status.

upload_2018-6-29_23-13-37.png

I have 2 Drives used by that volume (my only 2), and both are detected. One is a Wd RED (2TB), the other is some Seagate Barracuda (1TB)
upload_2018-6-29_23-10-30.png

I've browsed several posts with these same issues, but I didn't wanna start poking around since they all seemed to have their own unique solutions. Most of them start with asking for "zpool status", so I've gone ahead and included it here:
upload_2018-6-29_23-9-41.png

I'm quite new to this kind of thing, and I haven't messed around with any settings, so most of them should be their default.
Is it possible the files on the drives still are recoverable? A lot of stuff for ongoing projects and my work are on there :/

Thanks!

Post your complete hardware specs please along with the output of smartctl -a /dev/adaX for each drive replacing "X" with the drive number.

zpool import
upload_2018-6-30_13-59-28.png

Hardware:
upload_2018-6-30_14-21-46.png

Here is the Pcpartpicker list for my system.
The only thing that differs from my actual build is that the Barracuda is from an AIO desktop system (Model No. ST1000DM003), and there is a Maxtor 80Gb (Model No. 6L080M0 -I'm not sure if those are o's or 0's) Drive in there as well to store the OS. The 80 gig drive is very old, and I wouldn't be surprised if it broke something.

For the smartctl -a /dev/adaX command, I can't figure out how to scroll up in shell on the web interface, so here is what I could see.

For Drive [0]

Is there a way to see the full command somewhere? I've seen people able to get a text file output onto the NAS but I cannot access files on the system so this seems to be a bit of an issue to me :/

Thanks again.

Sure, use SSH to connect to your server rather than using the Shell button in the web GUI. What happens if you do zpool import Volume1?

You connect over SSH via putty or some other terminal program to run the commands and you can copy the output from there. What you've posted doesn't seem to be a problem but what exactly is this 80GB drive you just mentioned?

Thanks, and since I was told you couldn't use the drive you put FreeNAS on to store data as well, that drive is just there for for the OS. I don't use it for actual data storage. (Sorry, me saying "my only 2 drives" originally was a mistake)

Here:
upload_2018-6-30_15-58-12.png

Also, through Putty simply typing "zpool import" does nothing anymore (you can actually see where I tried above). The only thing I changed after enabling SSH was allowing me to log in w/ root.

Looks like Volume1 is online now. What's the result of zpool status now? And what does the Storage page in the GUI show now?

Yes, I just realized myself that the volume is accessible now.
Here is zpool status:

When I first booted the system at my Mom's, I was already having issues. I tried a few reboots last night but nothing changed. I left the system running overnight, and shut it down this morning to check the numbers on the Drives themselves, then booted it again - but now it seems to be working. Is there enough information to tell what happened? Could it happen again?

You're not running scheduled SMART tests on your drives. You need to get that set up soon. Also neither of the drives has had a long SMART test run on them. You should do that now to rule out any issues with the drives going forward.

Alright, I'll get right to that.
It doesn't give me an option to run a SMART test on the 80Gig Drive, though. Is there any other way to test that drive?

I wouldn't run them every day. Maybe once a week or every other week. I run my long tests twice a month.
Is there a way to run tests immediately?
From the CLI smartctl -t long /dev/ada0

Alright, Thanks for all the help! Would you recommend anything else going forward?

Just keep an eye on those drives to make sure they are doing ok. If you don't have email alerts set up do that next so if something pops up you'll get an email to let you know.

scan: scrub repaired 0 in 3h6m with 0 errors on Sun Feb 25 03:06:39 2018
(code tags for multi-line output, not cmd tags--the latter really mess with line wraps and such). The last scrub on this pool was four months ago. In addition to the SMART tests @Jailer mentioned, you should have a regular scrub for your pool--I'd suggest every 2-3 weeks, at a time that won't conflict with your SMART tests.

Would you recommend anything else going forward?

I would recommend some redundancy.

As I see it, your pool is striped across two disks. If one should fail (like it did temporarily), you will lose your whole pool.

Thanks, I just set it up!

I had a scrub set up already but for some reason, it was only enabled on Sundays so I just fixed that

Do you mean duplicating my data onto other disks? I've been recommended this before, but I'm currently using 2 out of the 3TB I have available and I don't have a way to back up the data currently :( I'll put it on my list of things that need to be done now though.

Thanks for everything!
