SOLVED Missing your /var/log folder? Solution is...

For those who come after me...

1. I had created a dataset called "data" and had set the "System dataset pool" (under System, System dataset) to "data".
2. I then deleted the "data" dataset to recreate it using the same name.
3. Now /var/log is a broken link.

I played around for a while before I went back to the "System dataset pool" which still was set to "data". I decided to select it again and hit "Save". Now /var/log works.

Seems the name is not what is being saved but some sort of UUID of the dataset. Since the original dataset was gone which is where /var/log was stored, the link was broken. So resaving the "System dataset pool" option fixed it.
