Hello,

I'm trying to put up a Freenas box:

- Microserver Gen8, 16Gb RAM, Celeron G1610T, 4 x 4Tb Wd Green, configured as RAIDZ2 or mirror, 8 TB usable

My Question: Can I run in a jail an OwnCloud server or it's too much for this config and I should upgrade to a Xeon ?

Thank you!

Anyone please? I have a pretty good deal for such a machine (used). But I don't know if it's enough as processing power or should I wait for a Xeon configuration.

Any help much appreciated!

The processor is a bit puny, but it should work. Depending on the server's specifics, you may be able to retrofit a better CPU (depends mostly on chassis thermals and motherboard power circuitry).

A friend of mine has a gen 8 and you can indeed replace the cpu with something more powerful

I've never used a Gen 8, but I've built a FreeNAS server in its predecessor, the N54L, and it runs great. Not a lot of power for media transcoding. But for serving up files, it's been dandy. I suspect the Gen8 will be just fine.

Ok, thank you guys

Finally I have it on my desk:

Microserver Gen8 w/ Pentium G2020T
16 GB ECC UDIMM Kingston KVR16E11/8I
4 x 4 Tb WD Green
2 x Sandisk USB Cruzer Fit 16 Gb.

Everything is second hand but brand new. Microserver and RAM have warranty, but I managed 150 USD discount. Disks don't have warranty (grey market) but were almost half the price and have zero hours on them. I burned 730 USD for everything, but I think is a good price.
Now I have to go with installation.

Make sure you run wdidle.exe on your WD Green's. Do a forum search on "wdidle" for more information.

As to this:

2 x Sandisk USB Cruzer Fit 16 Gb

One of these will probably go into the internal USB connector, right? Where would the second one be placed? The machine has rear and front USB connectors. Does this make any difference? (I'm asking because I have the same machine.)

Got any internal headers? If so, just use an adapter.

You can put them in any slots as long as they are USB 2.0. Beware, the USB 3.0 slots in this machine are not bootable.
Anyway Freenas doesn't love USB 3.0.

But the Cruzer Fit are obviusly designed to be very small to be placed in external slots. I put them in the front facing slots, to see the lights also.

Fine, thank you! I'll try this ASAP.

I'm aware of the USB 3.0 problem here, such a pity. :(

First tests w/ disks configured as mirror:
- 1Gbps line is fully saturated on read or write on a CIFS share
- scrub speed around 1 Tb / hour
