I am a long time unix user (since the early '80s) and I installed FreeNAS for a home NAS solution about three years ago.
I currently have FreeNAS running on a Lenovo TS440 with 32Gb of RAM, and 32Tb of HDD space. I've added a 4-port NIC card and have a lagg set up to a Cisco switch. I also have FreeNAS running under VMWare ESXI on a Dell R620 with 64Gb of RAM and 24Tb of HDD.
I suppose you could call this a virtualization lab, but I'm retired, and this is first, a way to back up and serve media, and second an absorbing hobby.
Pleased to meet you!
