I just got an LSI 9211-8I of ebay
But had some bother with it
IT Firmware P16 will detect my 7 sata 1 hard drives
But the IT P20 will not
The IR P19 the card came with was unable to detect the hard drives as well
Can the new firmware be missing sata 1 support?
I have 7 sata 1 (yes the first sata)500Gb seagate hard drives
It will detect only one not the rest
and is there a method to check the sata link speed?

Could be a weird interaction with your specific drives. Hard to say for sure, it's an unusual combination these days.

Smartcontrol or dmesg will list the current link speed for the one disk it found

on cli:
smartctl -a /dev/<device_id> eg da0 (you can obtain that from dmesg as well)

a normal smart read
still have a problem with it
as there is more information printed than space
so a lot is not visible
can i scroll up or save the smart report?

Depending on how you access the console you can enlarge the window ?;)

But you can run something like this to get the relevant value

smartctl -a /dev/da1 |grep "SATA Version"
SATA Version is: SATA 3.0, 6.0 Gb/s (current: 6.0 Gb/s)

or add "|more" to be able to page through the result

I can confirm
All 6 of the drives connected on the motherboard run as sata 1
The LSI 9211-8i will detect them with IT P16
But not on IT P20
the 7th drive runs as sata 2 and is detected on IT P20
So it can be as i suspected
That on the LSI 9211-8I sata 1 is not supported on new firmware tested IR19 and IT20

That's a little freaky. I wonder if I have any first gen SATA HDD's floating around here...

I just read in a other threat, that the P20 had/have issues.
The currently shipping firmware version for the 92XX HBA line is P20 which was released on September 22. The P20 firmware contains a bug that will show up as IO timeouts, disk errors and corruption on nearly every storage drive on LSI’s compatibility list......LSI support also informed me that the only fix for this issue is to return any effected HBA to the P19 firmware.

I flashed yesterday the LSI 9211-8i and it worked with P15 (two disks). Only when i configured the new system, the yellow light cathed my eye. It says that the driver Firmware version 15 does not match driver version 20 for /dev/mps0

The latest P20 is stable, as far as anyone can tell.
Assuming this thread really represents a real issue, it's still a rather niche situation that won't affect a significant amount of people.

So, flash that card to P20.

it is now flashed with P20. Most of the time went in to find the disk that was faulty (in a set of 7). Which was the faulty one... The set had no data on it yet. Strange was when I took a drive out of the drobo and put the faulty one into the drobo, the drobo 'said', ok! and rebuild that volume. This said more of the drobo then of freenas. But it does means that beginning with a set of old drives, failure is just around the corner.
