Hi forum people,

I have just encountered an issue. Perhaps someone here knows how to remedy this.

I'm running this system & version of freenas:

I have been accessing it using a Mac (OSX 10.6.8) via Apple AFP share. Creating files and folders all work.

Wanting to give another machine a Windows 7 machine access, I created a Windows CIFS share and enabled the service. I could see the machine in Windows explorer but using my usual log in that I use for the AFP share I couldn't log in.

I then created a new user that didn't require a password to log in an I got in but can't create any folders on the freenas machine. This is the first issue, but a minor one. (reason guest account?)

But here's the big issue: Next, I went to my Mac and tried logging into the freenas box the same way I had been doing so for weeks using my original login (Apple AFP share and service still enabled) and though I can log in I have now LOST THE ABILITY TO CREATE FOLDERS OR OTHERWISE WRITE FILES TO THE FREENAS BOX.

If anyone out there who can know what went wrong and can tell me how to fix it or better still how to get both AFP and CIFS access working at the same time, it will be much appreciated. I hope my description of the issue makes sense. I've been transferring my private documents into the freenas box and it will be a tremendous hassle if I have to somehow redo everything.

Cheers,
Daniel

I'm not sure what your exact problem is as there's plenty of ways you could have messed up the permissions. Permissions are a bane for new users.

But, you should be avoiding using multiple protocols to share the same files at the same time. Each protocol handles its own file locking, so a file locked in AFP isn't locked under CIFS. This can cause devastating damage to your files if you aren't careful. For that reason I'd strongly recommend you use CIFS exclusively(it has more support across platforms) and work on getting CIFS itself to work for you properly. CIFS should definitely saturate Gb with your hardware if your pool can keep up.

Hi Cyberjock,

Thanks for the advice. I'll certainly take it on-board. I've come across that advice before but because my existing documents are all in Mac formatted disks, that's why started with AFP. And for the above test, I always log out of my mac before I tried CIFS.

I've been very careful with permissions. I didn't change anything from my original AFP share.

BTW, if this helps with fixing the problem, I just noticed that I have only lost write permissions to the HOME DIRECTORY. If I drill down I can still create folders.

So now I'm not going to touch CIFS anymore as I still have lots of files to bring over to the freenas box. Using only AFP and running on a mac, how do I now restore my write permission to my home director on the freenas box?

Cheers,
Daniel

Ok, I've been reading around and educating myself. It now seems clear to me CIFS / Samba is the way to go. But how do I 'move' from AFP to Samba?

I mean is it safe to just close the AFP share & service, create the CIFS share and switch on the service and I'm good to go? Is it that simple or am I missing something here? Bearing in mind I have GBs of data put there using AFP.

Any experts out there?

It should be "just that simple". Of course, you will need to go through the CIFS settings and make sure that they make sense for your setup. But for simple setups like mine I would expect to be able to move the AFP just as easily as you should be able to move to CIFS.

Hi, I'm having the same issue, and while moving to CIFS is probably the answer, I still need to be able to get back my write permissions before I make the switch. Any suggestions, because I tried redoing the permissions on the share with no luck
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
