A little surprised I haven'rt been able to find one. Building my first machine now and would like to get more comfortable with it. Its not difficult to create but I was a little confused by one of the videos I saw which broke it down into two pieces. One looked like a boot drive and the second looked like the imaginary ZFS drive where I would install jails. This kinda makes since but I was looking for a little more assistance.

Thanks

It doesn't sound like he's planning on using it in production, though I don't know where (or if) there's a pre-built appliance of it.

@Nightowl805, the installation process works something like this:
  • Boot from the installer ISO
  • Install FreeNAS to a small (8-16 GB) boot device or two (if you use two, they'll be mirrored, giving you some redundancy)--this will be your system drive, and FreeNAS will boot and run from there. This device cannot be used for storage.
  • Boot from the newly-created boot device, log in to the web GUI, and configure storage from there. Any other drives you have on your system can be used for storage, but they'll have to be formatted for use with FreeNAS first.

In case anyone is interested, I created an OVA of a clean install. It's got 12x8GB virtual disks so you can play around. I installed 9.3 and updated today (6 Apr 2015).

Mod note: This is no longer available. Please look for something newer.
